Another Mystery Drum -

So I think this was made by Pearl given the lug spacing and the mount holes. However - the fiberglass inside is throwing me for a loop. I've never seen a kit look like this. The sizes are 13",14", toms, 16",18" floor toms,20",22" bass drums. Was thinking of doing a re wrap in green sparkle ( or something along those lines ) and making it into a monster rock kit with the 20" converted to a gong drum. But before I dive in I'm curious to know exactly what I have. is this rare? Is this a home job? Was there someone around who would do this for people back in the day?

That drum looks like it's been "Vibra-Fibed". I don't know the details other than it was an after market spray fiberglass interior coating.

I hope that's the case. I looked into it, and I'll have to see if I can somehow verify that these were worked on by Neal Graham of The Percussion Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. That would be awesome, and I might never part with these in that case, lol

Looks suspiciously like a 70s Pearl wood/fiberglass kit. I use one at my regular Sunday gig (belongs to the piano player). I think the model was called "Rockbeat". It's in the '76 Pearl catalogue...

I'd agree with the Pearl Wood/Fiberglass but the Vibra-Fibe process left the drum interior very coarse, like a boat hull on the inside. That is what that drum looks like to me. The Pearl strands were finer, like their process was more refined.

I yield to your superior knowledge, Sir. I know nothing of Vibra-Fibe. I'm curious now and suddenly want to have a good look inside the kit I use on Sundays. I'll take a pic this weekend and report back. Unless of course someone else beats me to it... :)

I reached out to a few places to see if they could shed any light on this for me. If I can see an actual interior of one that had been worked on that would help. Aside this being a home job, which I don't think is the case, but again I have no clue, lol.

From FloydZKing

it's pearl.

I don't think they are. Shell wise yes, but I don't think this fiberglass was their doing. It's to messy compared to what they did. Turns out it wasn't vibra-fibed and honestly stumped John over at Vic's Drum Shop. His best guess was they resemble the interior of North Drums, but he'd never seen it on a wooden shell. I suppose they could have been taken to a place and been coated with fiberglass, but I'd think the cost to do so wouldn't be worth it. Well regardless, this is one of the next kits on the block to be brought back to life.

I wonder if you may be thinking of the solid fiber glass shells Pearl also built in that era. They had a smooth interior and translucent yellow/tan color. Or maybe you are comparing this shell to the new Pearl w/fg drums which also have smooth interiors.

The 70s Pearl w/fg shells look just like what you have pictured - white spray resin with loose chop (a sort of pebbled texture) over thick 9-ply lauan. The drum also looks to be drilled for mid 70s Pearl hardware and wrapped in one of their period formica faux wood grain finishes.
