Hi Guys,
I'm into an experiment. I've created a drum kit from Beverly marching drums. I converted a 14x10 inch snare into a tom by removing the snare bed en recutting the upper and lower bearing edges. I'v concerted a 16x12 tenor tom into a floor tom, I've put spurs on a 26x12 bassdrum.
The toms have coated ambassadors top and bottom and sound absolutely great, very warm, a lot of tone. The bassdrum has a pretty thick single ply head "Ludwig ensemble heavy coated" batter side and a Premier Everplay single ply reso-side. The premier head I coated myself with white oil paint. I've experemented with muffling and tuning but the drum keeps sounding like a tin can a bit and has a different character than the toms.
Anybody any advice? I'm thinking of buying a coated emperor for batter side and use the ludwig head for reso. Would that make it a bit thicker? Or a coated powerstroke 3? Anyone any experience with playing these shallow shells? (Probably birch, 3 ply with beech re-rings)?
