Acrolite resto-mod

Loading...

Hey guys... just figured this would be a good place to document the resto-mod (restoration/modification) of this Acrolite. I picked it up on Craigslist this week for $15. The only hardware included were the lugs, which are 100% functional, though dirty with slight pitting.

This will actually be an early birthday present for my brother. He's so impressed with the way my Acrolite turned out, that he wants his own. It'll be cleaned, rebuilt and updated. I am planning to either paint or powder coat the shell (probably the latter), just to personalize it for him a bit.

On to the drum... a prior owner had decided that it would look better in gold glitter. They'd literally covered the entire shell with two-part epoxy and thrown glitter all over it. No chemicals would even touch the glue. It's hard stuff.

And here's a shot of it with the lugs removed.

The shell appears to be in very good shape, structurally-speaking. From the inside, it appears to be dent-free and round.

I just dropped it off at the sandblaster's place a couple of hours ago. He said $20 to get it cleaned.

Hopefully this will end up being a very nice player's drum that my brother will love for years to come.

I'm watching him do this as I type. The exterior is basically done. He's blasting the inside now. It'll require a bit of polishing to get the outside to be very smooth. The blasting leaves a very matte-like finish.

Pics forthcoming. :-)

Here's a shot of the man in action. He did a good job on the rear axle of my truck, and he's basically a one-man operation.

He charged an additional $10 for the interior.

Next on the agenda is deciding how it will be finished, and in what color. I'm not sticking with the regular old Acrolite gray paint. His favorite cor is blue, so I'm leaning toward a nice deep, somewhat dark blue. He likes the cast hoops and Trick strainer on mine, so it'll get those pieces as well.

I know he's a fan of tube lugs, so I'm strongly considering that option. It certainly is cost-effective, and the Chrome parts would look great against the dark blue shell.

I thought about that after the fact. I believe he was using cold slag, which is harder than the aluminum drum shell.

It's not actually blue, it's just the color of the light in that room. It has translucent blue shear drapes over the windows. :)

Another form of abrasive blasting is CO2 or dry ice...I'm not sure the results on an aluminum shell though.

Cheers

Sure glass beading would have left a smoother finish but would have taken alot longer to remove that epoxy glitter. Great job. Looking forward to the final result. I say keep the bowtie lugs, but that's just my opinion.

I know from recent experience that powder coating comes out beautiful. However, if the surface is a even as it appears in the photos it might be interesting to just clear coat it, as is. Just a thought....
