70s Royal Star

Hi,

This is a 70s drumkit of Star, a Royal Star, with Paiste 2000 Sound Reflections cymbals (14" Medium Hihat, 10" Splash, 16" Crash, 20" Ride, 18" Crash and 18" China Type), added by a Paiste 802 18" Ride.

On the pics still a Meinl 10" Splash can be seen, in the meantime it's replaced by the Paiste 2000 SR Splash.

The Snare drum is a fitting Imperial Star 14" x 5", so called 'King Beat' with parallel strainer, the top modell of Star.

Greetings from Germany - Ralf

NB: as you can see on pic 2 (please look further below, in the starting post there is just one pic allowed!), the original double tom holder still exists and can be re-mounted again at any time. But I have replaced it by the awesome latest Starclassic star-cast mounting system in combination with modified parts of a new Tama double tom holder (without drilling extra holes, so that the original condition of the old Star bass drum is not touched, which was important for me!).

Hi Jaye,

Thanks for your comment. I think the finish is COPPER - not bronze ... ;)

The sizes are:

12" x 8", 13" x 9", 16" x 16" and 22" x 14" (= standard sizes in the 70s).

BTW (1), I own the same kit with a second finish (called "Silver Zoom", it looks like chrome) as well. I play one in the public (the chrome one) and leave the

beloved one (copper) in the safety at home.

BTW (2), STAR = the predecessor of TAMA. Name changed to TAMA in 1974.

Greetings - Ralf from Germany

What are the shells made of ? I have owned several Star and Royal Star shells, orphans, which I slid into other Japanese kits of that era...

Hi Jaye,

Most probably: maple, 9 mm thick and 5-ply (my guess) plus reinforcement rings (8 mm thick).

Heavy weight shells! The inside of the shells is lacquered (originally done - not later added).

That must have been one of their top kits, then...I have only come across Luan-shelled Stars.

Sounds quite cool.

Yes, indeed, it was the top line of Star at that time.

Please check out:

www.drumarchive.com

I have placed there my original Star catalogue, which I fortunately still own, showing the different series of Star at that time.

It seems that there is just one pic in the Gallery allowed.

So I like to add a second one in this post, showing the original double tom holder placed on the bass drum including mounting tom toms.

Greetings - Ralf

Yes, that is a similar mount to what Pearl used in the '60's, but Pearl's had hex rods.

Are those rods round on the tom mounts ?

Also...how did that 802 slip into those 200's ? ;)

Hi Jaye,

Thanks for your attention!

That 802 Plus-Ride allows another Ride-Sound than the 2000-series 20" Ride (which has a stronger 'ping').

I like to vary the Ride-sounds ...;)

A close-up pic of the DTH follows soon, answering your other questions.

Greetings - Ralf
