70's Ludwig Restoration Project

Howdy campers!

I just scored this kit off the list, and am a little torn at what to do.

70's Super Classics (I think)

14 x 10

15 x 12

16 x 16

24 x 14

14 x 5 Supra

It's been re-wrapped and painted black on all the interiors, so I'm not 100% certain on the construction yet.

Pretty sure that I'm going to wrap with Mod Orange from Jammin Sam (EXCELLENT customer service), but I am torn at what to do with the 15. It's a little hurky as a rack tom, and pretty shallow for a floor tom.

Also, the wood hoops/claws on all the reso's are throwing me off (some of them are stamped WFL). I don't know that I have ever seen this setup before.

Thoughts and feedback are appreciated, I had absolutely no business buying a 3rd drum set, but just couldn't pass up this deal... $140 for everything pictured.

I've made floor toms out of a couple of 12x15 drums and can get a good low tone out them.

If you need Ludwig stuff to complete the set Ill trade you for the 12x15 tom. Are them 3 ply w/ re-ring shells?

If you need Ludwig stuff to complete the set Ill trade you for the 12x15 tom. Are them 3 ply w/ re-ring shells?

Not sure yet, haven't had any time to strip them down (and get through the black paint). I'll let you know though, what do you have in mind for trade things?

That's an awesome deal ! I just hope you have a nice sparkle wrap underneath, or at least a nice natural lacquered finish, which will make it easier and less painful to remove the paint.. Also, the spurs don't look original and look unevenly placed, unless that's just the reso head on crooked..

You can make a nice configuration out of those. I would lose the rack mount, put the 14 on a snare stand as a up tom and use the 15" next to the 16" as a down tom. You could hang the 15" off a cymbal stand or a rims mount. Probably put regular rims on the toms. Will be a really cool set. Those are nice drums.

I put Ludwig mounts with the 23" legs on a Ludwig 15" ride tom. Works a treat as a floor tom beside the 16. And the longer legs make matching the tom levels easier.

You are the second person to mention ditching the wood hoops... curious as to why. Is it a sound thing or a "keep it stock" thing? I'm still uncertain if I'm going to keep or flip these, which may drive the needs of this project.

I am, however, leaning heavily towards virgin kick with a stand mount rack tom, but something about mixing a stand, suspension, AND floor tom doesn't seem to jive ascetically.

Oh, and I did confirm that at least the 15" is a 3-ply with rings.

I think it's wood underneath the black wrap, the paint looks to be on the interiors only. And yeah the spurs look aged appropriately, but not sure if they are original yet.

Reso head is crooked, AND the spurs were not adjusted evenly in that pic. Basically they had this setup as a mongoloid, even the gibralter rack was assembled half wrong.
