Mitch, I tried it also and see what your saying. I like odballs suggestion of some new shinny washers but it looks as thought some new shinny screws will have to accompany them, not all bad.
By the way those screws are a 8/32 thread, same as cabinet door pulls!

Shiny new screws and washers all around - not all bad indeed! Good to know the thread on those thanks for that. Is it still common and in wide use? I was told that the 12-24 NC used for tension rods was falling out of use...

Well, the shells are getting better and better. Today I all of a sudden remembered I have a detail sander (I never use it) sitting in a drawer. Did not have any sanding pads for it so I took some 5" round hook and loop pads and cut them to fit the pointy base of the sander. I also took a old sanding sponge ( they are about 1/4" thick) and cut it about 1/2" wide, placed it down the center of the sanders base and wrapped the newly fabricated sanding pad over the sponge creating a roundish base to conform to the drum shell. Wow, what a great discovery, my sanding is now about done! Even the holes I plugged look better. Starting to get excited, maybe, just maybe veneer going on next weekend.
I tend to try every tool in my arsenal when I'm fighting with a new, or different task. I never want the answer to be elbow grease, but much of the time that's where I end up. Nice that you came up with a sander to help save some sanity.... Looking nice by the way. It's nice to see your steps. I find myself wasting time just to look at the last thing I got done... Glenn Wow a master grainer in the family how awesome is that I have found a fed master wood grain artunder 35 layers of paint and wallpaper very nice to have a bit of grandpas work preserved
Jeff I am meaning in side or out to do any grain the plain wood with the right dye based can be a start I sw a master grainer a old Scott do a birdeye with his knuckles ll we will talk soon and over that beer
Well Gary, that is an interesting concept. A little to late for this project since I have everything read to go but lets have that beer(beers) in Chicago this spring and you can tell me more. Or email me some info when you have time, I'm open for new challenges.

Well, disappointed at first. The shell looked almost new before the lacquer, but the lacquer brought out the dark stuff again. But the more I look at it the more it looks like how a vintage drum should look. I couldn't sand anymore, I sanded this thing to death, it wont look much better.
