I wonder how much a '63 or '64 model be worth? I would think that those drums were cranked out by the truckload after Feb 1964.

I've heard as much as 36 k

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

After 20 years of hunting for a deal on one of these I finally knucked under and shelled out $2000 for one. That was actually a great price. The demand for these "Ringo" snares is high and the supply is low so they go for much more than the typical jazz fest. Ludwig did crank out scads of OBP drum sets from 1964-1968, probably more than any other wrap, but! almost all those sets were sold with a chrome supra as a snare. A matching wood snare was a special order option. Even so I'm confident that at least a thousand of these should exist, if not more (at one time, back in the pre internet age, the "rumor" was that only 200 or so were ever made and they were very expensive even back then).

The typical Jazz fest layup with the badge on the second panel away from the throw off are the drums that sell for $1500-$4000+ (depending on condition and who's looking for one at any given time). Ringo's snare that he used all through the Beatles (he had more than one OBP snare but seems to have used the first one he got exclusively for recordings and live gigs) has the badge on the panel adjacent to the throw off (which is why it is readily identifiable in photos) and is also a 5.5" deep shell which makes it something of an even further rarity. That way of building Jazz fests was changed at just about the same time as the Beatles hit so there aren't many like that. Even the drummers that thought to order a wood snare to match their OBP set got a slightly different drum. The few that do match Ringo's configuration are the ones that sell for the really big money. I've heard tell of an offer of $30K for one like that...and that offer was turned down.

This one is probably too high by about $1500 but you never know what someone might pay if they have been looking long enough. I always figured that an affordable one would surely pop up somewhere where someone wouldn't know what they had and sell it at a reasonable price, but years went by with no luck, and, thanks to the internet, it's less likely that an uninformed seller will remain that way.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the story is true or not because I've only heard it secondhand. While those drums set up just like Ringo's are quite rare, and certainly would bring a premium price over a more "common" version, $30,000 does seem insane. I just bought a really nice Porsche for not much more than half that much.

I confess when it come to Ringo, for me it's a case of the Emperors new clothes. I really don't get it. Maybe it's being a child growing up in Britain in the 60s or something. While the Beatles undoubtedly shaped the sound of music, I'm not sure that Ringo (as a drummer) was that influential. I can think of others such as Brian Bennet and Charlie Watts who were far superior.

1920s 14"x5" Ludwig Super Sensitive Dual Snare
1957 6 1/2" x15" Slingerland WMP Concert King
1938 8"x15" Leedy Broadway Standard
1947-53 14x6.5" NOB Ludwig & Ludwig Universal
...plus a bunch of mismatched Slingerlands that collectively make a pleasing noise.
