60's Slingerland light blue pearl resto thread.....

This will be the start of my resto thread on the Slingerland project kit.

I'll cover the main problem areas first. The reso side of the 12", 13" and 16" toms have some seperation at the bearing edges. The 13" is one of the worst with a huge 1/8" gap in one area. So we started this one first. For this repair I went to my son Dan's house who builds and restores custom and vintage guitars. He cut, sanded and fitted some maple veneer into the seperation as it was too large of a gap to just glue and clamp. Once this area is dry we'll move around the edge of the shell and repair and glue the rest. Then fill and lightly sand the bearing edges nicey nice. He cut some wood blocks that contour the edge of the shell insde and out. We'll use these for this one and make new ones for each shell as we progress. Here's a pic of the shell glued and clamped in place. At this point I need to give some props to my son Dan for his help. www.dgncustomguitars.com He does some very nice work! More to come..........

Thanks Shawn. It's about half done glue wise and I should be able to finish it up tomorrow. Then the 12 and 16 are next. I have some hardware on the way needed to complete it. I'm still short 1 bass drum spur so I'll make a temp out of round stock until I can find one.

A tip my son told me to do is while you glue the seperation spray a tiny bit of water on the glued area and work it in with your finger tip before you clamp it up. I also used a very small thin putty knife to work it into the seperation. The water helps the glue "wick" into the cracks/seperation and gets deeper into it. And has no ill effect on the glue bonding. Wipe the excess off with a wet finger or damp paper towel after it's clamped. Less cleanup when dry.

13" is all glued and ready for assembly. I'll get some pics of that later. 12" next up on the bench. Minor glue here. Didn't have time for the 16" today so we'll get that one tomorrow.

12" on the bench. Boring pics so far I know but all part of the process.

I was going to change the title of this from "resto" to "preservation" as this is more of a cleanup and fixup than a full blown restoration. But I can't edit the title. These babys have some rash and scars and are far from mint. It's just a nice players kit for me but I'm very happy to have them.

That's good to hear Stu. You'll have a blast doing it and please post pics when you do.

The blocks we made to clamp the drum were easy. Find a suitable thickness block (1" or so) of wood and trace the outside and inside of the shell circle on it. Then cut it out with a jig or band saw. I had about a 6" spot on the 13" edge with bad seperation. So we made the blocks about 8" for some overlap. I wrapped the outside of the shell edge with masking tape and where the shell was just glued and clamped I used some wood veneer to help protect the wrap where it's just clamped. Cardboard would work just as well I'd think. I used the larger wood clamps at the ends of the area being glued. This prevents the re ring from futher seperation around the drum and having to "chase it around" so to speak. The clamps also have cork on them to help protect the shell a bit. I was able to sand the center of the outer wood block from the 13" to fit the 12" nicely. But I need to make new blocks for the 16" before it's glued. The glue I used was just Gorilla Glue from Home Depot. It's super strong glue and works great. I'm by no means a woodworker type of guy. Cars are my main thing hobby wise. But some tips and guidance from my son has really helped me along. Oh and lots of clamps too!!

12" needed a bit more glue repair. Finished that today and 16" gets glued tomorrow. Need to polish the 2 tom mounts. If all goes well they'll be together in the next few weeks.

Inside the bass drum shell has been painted black. Not a big deal to me but still undecided what to do there. It's not a heavy coat and looks like it was spray painted. Might stay that way for now. I'm VERY anxious to see how they sound. After a few months I'll take the heads off and see how the repairs are holding up. And maybe then address the bass drum paint. Still need to chase down a few more parts. But nothing that'll prevent me from using the set as is.
