'48 Radio King Set Possibly Coming My Way

A friend up in CT called me today to see if I was interested in his '48 Radio King set. They're 13/16/22 with a 5 1/2" snare. The beavertail lugs on the bass drum were replaced, but are an exact match for the rest of the set. The BD rims are a bit beat up, but can be repainted. Otherwise, the set is all original, the wrap is tight all around and in nice shape. Oh yes, and they are Black Diamond Pearl, not the usual WMP, which everyone else has. I have detailed photos of everything. He even has all the original calf heads! The first owner bought them after he was discharged from the Army in '48, played them for a while, got married and the drums went into a closet until my friend bought them after the owner's demise.

He's holding them for me until I can figure out how on earth I can make this happen financially. I won't reveal the price, but it's very reasonable, considering I'm getting the snare too. What I have to do now, is unload some stuff I'm not using; drums, cymbals, hardware, my first born (kidding), etc. Maybe a guitar or two.

So, the gold glass glitter Stewart set is for sale. Make an offer. The red sparkle Apollo set is for sale. I have at least a dozen cymbals for sale. Those are going up on Reverb or Ebay. One of them is a Meinl Profile 18" Volcano Rock Crash, and I have never seen another Profile cymbal for sale anywhere. Very rare.

This RK set is not going up for sale publicly until I give him an answer. I can't let these go! Excited

I think my friend estimated the age of the drums after talking to the family of the man who owned them. I checked the photos I have. The snare is 5 1/2." All the photos I have are on my cell phone right now. If and when I get the drums, I'll post photos, of course.

Definitely go for it, Bob. Those two stencil brand drum sets are just taking up space that can be filled by a once in a lifetime drum set. Some of your guitars, that can easily be replaced, are also expendable.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Thanks, Jeff, I agree; BDP is so nice and somewhat rare on an RK set of that vintage. I spent a lot of time today taking photos of a guitar and cymbals and posting them online, Craigslist to start, but they may go up on Reverb if CL doesn't produce results. I have to raise some cash for these RKs. I'm not dipping into my retirement fund for them, and I know my friend will hold them for me with a small deposit until I can get the funds together. Will definitely post photos when they land in my music room.

The version of Black Diamond Pearl that Slingerland and SlingerLeedy used was a larger random pattern that was more lively and had more varying shades of black, gray, and silver than the Black Diamond Pearl wrap used by most other drum makers.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
