I saw Dickie Betts band a few years ago, Great Southern, and it was like an ABB cover band. 3 drummers up in back, one black, one white, a percussionist in the middle of them, and a keyboard off to the side playing a hammond with a leslie behind him. Sound familiar?

Bill - I used to sit up front at the old Filmore, close enough to get hit with ABB sweat. lol I love that band. I must have seen them live, back in the day, at least 20 times. I couldn't get enough of them. Butch & Jamo just worked so well together. I watched those guys follow Greg and the crew through 20 minute jams on-stage and they never stepped on each other, not once. Those guys had some kind of psychic thing going, one guy always knowing what the other one is going to do. It was an amazing experience for me, (as a drummer who could appreciate what it took,) to watch and listen to Butch and Jamo play together.

For me, it was like going to church...

Hey John,

I'm jealous; never had the pleasure of seeing Duane with the band. Nice!

I used to see them all over the NY Tri-State area and many, many, many times at Jones Beach Theater (One night, we were treated to a lightning show during their show.)

Still listen to and play along with them on CD's and vinyl. Fun trying to play two guys at once. Never understood why bands with two drummers would have the drummers play the same thing, .38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and a few others.

Anyway, gonna' go listen to "Black Hearted Woman" and "Elizabeth Reed".

Surprised that no one mentioned Genesis with Phil Collins and Chester Thompson (who also played double drums with Frank Zappa). They didn't play together on every song, but it was cool when they did.

This is also a little out there, but the mid-1990s King Crimson with Bill Bruford and Pat Mastelotto had its moments.

Joe Walsh has been known to tour with two drummers. Andy Newmark joined Joe Vitale on "You Can't Argue With a Sick Mind." I saw Joe Walsh in 1980 with Vitale with Russ Kunkel. They tossed sticks at each other while keeping the beat during the breakdown of "Funk 49."

As an aside, I recommend playing with another drummer if you get the chance. I've done it at a few jams and it can be a lot of fun if you do it with the right person ... both players need to be good listeners.
