1st time restoring

Loading...

I am currently getting ready to begin my first restoration project. I was given a set of 13", 16" & 22" 3 ply clear interior Ludwig shells that I have almost aquired the parts needed to get them playable. My plan is to get the drums assembled with heads on them to see if the bearing adges need to be done before I have them wrapped.

I am just wondering if there is anything I should be mindful of or something that is easy to overlook since I'm starting with just shells? Any tricks or tips would be appriciated! Bowing

Are the shells bare then? What wrap are you thinking of? Good luck!

The 13" has glue that needs to be cleaned up. The 16" was painted. Lucky for me it's already been sanded ant the bearing edges were cleaned up. The bass has a butcher block wrap that I need to remove.

I'm going to with either blue sparkle or red sparkle for the new wrap. I was thinking of maybe a jellybean kit but I don't think it's "me".

Ya us old people here ned pictures to figure out whats going on, so you have three shells ans some parts, lugs, mounts rims. You say you are going to have them wraped? Not doing it yourself?

Thank you!

What do you need to know, sounds like you answered your own questions!

Yea, I don't see any questions that you've already answered yourself. Don't do the Jelly Bean kit, they look juvenile.

PIcs of the shells would help. Does the bass drum have a hole for a tom mount or a rail? IM pretty sure thay all take large classic lugs. You can find anything original on ebay or here on the forum. Drummaker.com has good prices on wrap and tension rods, rims, claws etc.....Decide weather you want to glue the wrap on or use the tape method. Clear maple shells could be keystone or blue/olive badges. Do you have the original hoops/rims? Some people on here are anal about original rims and tension rods, but I dont see what it hurts to put brand new shiney ones on. The old ones polish up pretty good with Nevr Dull wadding. Will you have to plug any holes? I always grade the lugs and put the nicest ones it the more visable places. Some want to make sure the lugs go exactly where they came off. Lots of tips on restoration help at the top of this page. Read and search the forum. Xylene is the best adhesive remover on the planet, but be well ventilated and dont get near a fire with it. Not very many issues that havent been discussed on this forum.

Thanks all. I'll get some pics up shortly. I think at this point i have collected everything except some of the tension rods for the toms.

One of the hoops needs to be refinished, Need to find out how to do this correctly.

The bass is drilled for a center post. Still need to descide if I want to ad a 12" or not.

Gonna have the wrap glued. Since I haven't done it before I'm having it done. But I want to see how to do it.

I'm not that worried about building a museum piece. 0ne or the 16" rims isn't correct and I'm just gonna grab new tension rods.

I don"t know if I want to get badges for it or not. If I do I'm thinking to just do the non serial number B/O badges.

Since I've never done anything like this I'm just trying to avoid any newbie mistakes or over looking something.
