1990s Ludwig scratches

Loading...

May not be the right spot for this, but I'm interested in knowing what might clean up the scratches on this Ludwig Black Beauty. It's not really "black" but a straight nickel finish, although it's advertised as a BB. It's a decent deal on a 6 1/2".

Thanks in advance!

I am still trying to figure out what happened to that poor snare.

It doesn't look like it is a brass shell.

It does look like it did have some plating on there but doesn't look like a BB.

Not an expert though , so would like to see what others think.

I don't think there's anything that can be done to "clean" that snare. Those are scratches through the finish. Have it re-chromed.

Why am I seeing long rods on the top and shorter on the bottom ? Is it me or does anyone else see it?

I think you're seeing a bottom head that's very unevenly tensioned on the left side.

Looks like the snare cord for Puresound Snare Wires.

I will never understand how some drummers care enough to replace the adequate stock snares with premium, expensive snare wires because of the sound they are after, yet let the shell get all scratched up as if they don't care about the drum at all. It just doesn't make sense.

It's like replacing the cup holders in your Ferrari with premium, expensive cup holders, but scraping the door against a wall as you open it and not caring.

So this is a Chrome over Brass model???

The picture quality isn't the greatest... and I can't really see any brass peaking out from underneath the scratches in the chrome. Makes me wonder if it actually is a brass shell.

Also, to me, it looks like there is a bigger problem with the chroming based on all that stippling, it almost looks like Chromy (that's Woody Woodpecker's metallic cousin) was pecking away at a significant portion of the surface.

Are you looking at getting this from a retailer or private party? Just asking because if you can't get better pictures to assess the shell issues you may want some return protect.

There are a few different tension rods on this drum from what I can see.

I don't think it is brass either. as stated in my first reply.

Additional pics. Appears to be brass judging by the BR stamp and brass showing in the extra holes of the shell. You can maybe see the surface blemishes a little better as well.

Price is $400. It was evidently a "sales rep sample" according to the seller, who's reputation appears to be solid. I'm thinking I can deal with a blemished brass player Ludwig at that price (especially a 6.5 inch) if the sound is there, extra holes and warts and all. Kinda vacillating on it though...

Maybe, just maybe, the "BR" stamp was for a famous drummer with those initials...........can't recall who............maybe it was made for him?
