Welcome to the forum!Especially to a fellow Pearl fiberglass guy!If you've "lurked" around for awhile before posting you may know that I'm the guy that gets excited when Pearl fiberglass or wood-fiberglass threads pop-up, and I've ALWAYS got something to say! And somebody on here's thinking... oh no! here comes another "book!" And they're right!Your drums look great! My Observations:1) Yes, no doubt 1970 "Dyna Family" Era. My guess is this finish is either "Silver Satin" OR possibly "White" that has faded to the shade you seem to have. A quick check under the lugs will help out there. The exception to this may be that another finish may have been available in the Austrailian market. I do know of at least one other example of what was available over there and NOT here in the US market. Also, if you'll notice the white nylon "collar" on the tom holder on the BD -- IF I'm not mistaken, Pearl only did that "officially" in 1970 and possibly 1971. There is always the possibility of "anomolies" (we all know that happens with any manufacturer!) with that showing up later, but was "officially" discontinued by 1972. That's my UNDERSTANDING of the use of the nylon collar. If I'm wrong, I'm open to being corrected.2) Interesting configuration. The three smaller toms (6,8,10) all seem to be mounted on one stand, with, as you stated the largest tom (which should be 14x16) with legs as a floor tom. Normally the concert toms are in pairs. The conversion to a floor tom (IMO) happened at a much later date, as the leg brackets are NOT period correct (those are 80s Pearl Export brackets, as far as I can see in the pic).3) Again from the pic, the CTs do appear to be "phenolic" based upon the tell-tale sign of the slightly exposed bottom edges. As jonnistix already pointed out, the phenolic shells are a "reddish brown" or "maroon" color. Fiberglass is more of a "tan." Now, the BD appears to be either fiberglass or wood-fiberglass, as Mikey777 says the longer badge will say. Usually, the wood-fiberglass has a white interior -- but in early production runs the lining was the same color as the regular fiberglass shells. All in all, you're going to be THRILLED with this set! I know I would be!BTW, I've taken some photos of the slight differences in Pearl "production" in the early 70s. I was going to post them all here, but have decided that I'm just going to start a new thread. I've got to find some more examples, take more pictures, re-size them, and it's about time we left for church. So later today (but probably sometime later this week) I'll get that thread posted under "Vintage Non-USA."Man, I LOVE these drums!Photo 1: Pearl fiberglass shell (left), Pearl phenolic shell (right)Photo 2: Tom mount with nylon collar (left), whitout (right)Bill

Gee... when I said "I'm open to being corrected" (notice the proper use of quotation marks!), that's not what I meant. However, I will be sure to use italics to draw attention to certain words in the future... it's just easier to type in the quotation marks than it is to go back and highlight then slect the italics tool... Please forgive!

Forgive My Ignorance, I'm new the politics and protocols - needless to say I've found everyone's enthusiasm and wit to be of high class and I'm glad you've all taken interest in this beast...

I am dubbing it the "Dyna-Saw" 'cause it's A(ncient) Class Shells will cut through most Amps!

Bill - Thankyou Especially for your helpful hints :)

When I have it here and set up I'll make a Youtube Memory and drop the link here...

Cheers!

Yes, will do - I already have Grande Plans for this tom config. and will certainly do my best to utilize it tastefully whilst retaining the traditional reason these toms were created - so the Drummer could be more melodic with their approach to the toms.

As a Drummer that thrives on melody, I'm hoping these beauties will compliment the sound that I'm striving for.

The Youtube thing is inevitible! My Keyboardist has already slapped me on there whilst I was warming up for a rehearsal. He wanted a few "tips" as he's pretty handy with the sticks himself!!!

Stay Tuned!

Wow, I had a set just like this when I was 13 back in 1983. Mine were evans hydraulic heads. Bought it off my drum teacher. I tried to hit every one of those toms on every roll...lol I didnt have the money for cymbals so I had some cheap Camber cymbals. One ride, one crash, a set of hats, and a gazillion toms. Sure brings back memories.

Hahaha - Yes Too Tempting to try and use every tom in every roll - that's probably why I was banished to a 4 or 5 Piece for my Young Years!!!

However, Times have changed - Taste has Changed but one thing is for sure, I'm going to use all of it! I laugh when I see those old catalogues with MONSTER KITS that have 3 Cymbals - lol

I have 2 of everything "Cymbal-wise" so it's not too hard to deck out a multi-tom configuration. One of my previous Pearl's was a Complete Symmetrical Set-up.

The Current Pearl - besides the Phenolic - is a 12 Piece BLX Mangini-style with toms that mirror each other outwards from the 8" tom in front of the snare - 2 Kicks and a Snare (of which I have 3 Free Floaters of diff. depths and materials to choose from) A Man Has to have Options...

As for the Phenolic Kit - I just HAD to have it!!!

Cheers ;)

Can you do me a BIG favor? When you get the kit can you check inside the shells to see if there is any names engraved inside the shells or look for where a space that has been scratched, sanded, buzzed that might be big enough for a name, address and phone number?

I had a set of these in the mid 70's that were stolen from my home. They're probaly not but I would like to know what happened to them. I'm not making any claims on them or causing anyone grief, I'm just curious where they ended up.

That was a great kit, loved the way they sounded. You will too.

PS: I have the BD Pedal from the kit. Let me know if you want it.

I'm not using it.
