Dude! You've even got the towel on the second floor! That has to be the coolest Buddy kit I've ever seen. Seriously (and I'm not serious often).

The only complete Rogers kit I've currently got in my meager collection is a blue onyx Cleveland-era Holiday kit. It pales in comparison to yours but I still love the looks and sound of it. Thanks to you it's even got three original, era-correct swan leg cymbal stands.

Hah! I got a kick out of your mic set-up! Identical to the one I have used for years. Those two SM-70's overheads in a cross-over pattern really give good coverage of the kit. Picks up the brass and toms perfectly. Another mic for the BD and one for snare and you're good to go. It's a great recording set-up too! There's just no real need for all the extra mics. Just complicates the mix, not to mention all the wires everywhere. I also noticed the Evans EMAD! I use them on everything with just the basic damp-ring. I never add the others on. Dial in a nice fundamental note on the reso and the bass drum sings when you thump it. Excellent batter, no other muffling needed really.

Yeah... I've had these up here a number of times, but this pic came available, so I thought it might be nice to show them.. ( again! ) .. as there are so many NEW members on the VDF now. Still greatly appreciate the comments from ALL of you that have been here for a while and have "suffered" through looking at this set. LOL!

Interesting bit on the towel: I normally play/use that 2nd 16X16, as did Buddy early on. For whatever reason, he abandoned the actual playing of the 2nd 16X16 around the time of his Slingerland endorsement. From that point on, it became a "table" of sorts for his towel. Right up 'till that Slingerland endorsement he used it though. So... many guys said I should put a towel on the 2nd 16X16 ala Buddy... so I did for this gig! That is the ONLY time I have ever done that too... so of course pics were taken! It does, without a doubt, look VERY Buddy!

I know you have seen these more than a few times.. ( although I do show them in different venues/gigs ) .. and I STILL appreciate your kind words! Your "meager collection" ? Pretty NICE collection truth be told! The fact that you own/play a set of Rogers, well... you know! Gotta LOVE the Swan leg cymbal stands. ( actually all the Swivo era hardware for that matter ) Incredibly light, yet completely sturdy!

At most ALL the venues I play, sound is supplied, and the sound companies usually WANT to close mike my set... I politely decline... for the very reasons you have stated here. A single overhead, or two.. ( condenser ) .. bass drum from the front.. snare/HH as there are a better than fair amount of brushes played with this gig... and that's all ya need! Especially so for a jazz/swing gig. This set up picks up the entire set EVENLY, and makes it very easy to mix out front. When I have to mike up myself, I do the same, altough I use only one overhead. Ah... the EMAD. Indeed. a "jazz purist" might scoff at my choice for a BD batter.. but .. I have to cover ALL styles of music with all the different types of gigs I do, and the coated EMAD is the ticket. ( all my bass drums are set up this was as well) I play this set 90% of the time regardless of the type/style gig, and these drums are always up to the task. The only type of playing I don't do, or ever get called for, would be a straight ahead R&R gig, as that isn't my bag playing wise, although I enjoy the guys that do! This set would NOT really work within that idiom with regard to the way they are set up tension/tuning wise, with the exception of the bass drum. With the EMAD, it could deliver easily! Reso is the ORIGINAL OEM Rogers front head, and I just have a felt strip for a little dampening. Has never let me down. THANKS for the comments!

Tommyp! What a great way to start my day! Your Rogers kits are always a joy to behold, with the "icing on the cake" being the addition of the matching Dynasonic.

You look totally at home, and in control, at the "drivers seat" of this gorgeous kit. Buddy would approve! I also couldn't help but notice the towel sitting on the second floor tom. Buddy!

Two 16x16 floor toms? I didn't realize he had 2 of same size. I heard he hid his liquor in one of them (or kept his drinks on one)... I guess you do the same?
