1952 Tromsa 14 x 6 w.m.p.

The serial # inside has a 52 at the beginning and the lugs are the older nickel on cast aluminum, Tromsa used in the 50's. The 8 hole hoops are virtually identical to Trixon hoops from '47-'50; nickel on cast aluminum. The 3 ply Poplar, with 2 ply beech re-rings shell is the same construction as every Tromsa snare shell I have ever seen. It has a parallel strainer with a 12 strand carbon steel set of wires. The snare guard is very substantial, rivetted on cast aluminum---- 1/4" thick. This is a very fine playing drum. Tight and controlled with super response for a 6". The cast aluminum hoops and lugs are extremely dead, letting the shell do the talking. The w.m.p. Wrap is original and only a little yellowed.

See now I like that plate idea on the bottom snare hoop better than the cast one`s that everybody breaks !!

I've seen it on a few other drums-----certainly older ( 30's?) British drums. Perhaps the extra labour to have someone fit it and rivet it on eventually spelled the designs' deathknell.Not sure ,if anyone still does this kind of construction. When this drum was made , the German labour costs were extremely low, way below England's. The first Volkswagens arrived in Canada the year this drum was made ----sold for about 900.00-----so I am pretty sure the labour costs were low low low.

Nice REAL NICE....After the war,it took a long time til Germany could start making "luxury" items. they used what they had or get ahold of and came up with some pretty neat drums. V

Beautiful drum and looks very well made. I like the double tear drop lugs. And man those hoops are heavy duty! Good stuff.

Thank you all. The drum came in a case-----kind of like a suitcase really-------had a stand too. My suspicion is that it was used as an orchestra drum or by a percussionist. The case was certainly no gigging case!

I just noticed the evans all weather orchestra made in USA,....has small logo Sonor mallets on it !! That small logo puts evans doing buisness with Sonor in the seventies,..I didn`t know that !!

I never thought of that. That's the head that came on the drum and the drum came from Germany, so Sonor had picked up Evans at some point. I have a bunch of Sonor heads from the early 60's , also with the little double mallet logo but those are Tromsa made heads.

Also of interest to you , might be a Sonor Tosco 16" handhammered cymbal from very early in Toscos history-----certainly the early 70's. It is a surprisingly good cymbal. I will post some pictures on the cymbal forum , perhaps today.
