1940 Slingy Radio King 7" x 14"

Loading...

Hi All,

Here is one I've been working on for a little while. It's a 1940 (aluminum cloud badge,) Slingerland Radio King, 7" x 14". It was a mess when I got it, blue paint on everything, all hardware was covered in gunky dirt and needed serious detailing. The only thing missing is a 3-point strainer which, thanks to Blairdrums, will be here shortly, and I need a set of snares. I have been itching to finish this one and play it.

It came out great. There were imperfections in the wood under the heavy paint, but after stripping and sanding, I decided to leave a couple in because they lend the drum some real character. The hoops and hardware cleaned up nicely. Some of the nickel on the snare guards is worn, but again, it makes the drum look its age and kinda cool.

3-ply shell with re-rings. Mahogany inside, poplar, maple outside. Rock maple re-rings. I stained the natural wood a honey color which really makes it look very rich and inviting. I'm gonna have me some fun with this one!

Enjoy, another drum rescued from the trash heap!

John

Congratulations on a fine job. I love the way the hardware and shell look. That Slingerland stamp on the hoop is a nice touch by slingerland I've always liked the way that looks. 7x14 3ply shell is one of my favorites.

A very beautiful drum :Santa:

Very nice John, I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing to a 40's 14x7 RK, actually been working on it this morning. I think yours is the Hollywood Ace Swing Model Radio King, which was inspired by Maurice Purtill, I think these were the 3 ply shell RK's. Not positive about that, probably need to get a real Slingy expert to verify, but I think they're pretty rare. Here's a link to the catalog pages in VDG.

Mine is the Super Gene Krupa Radio King with the Clam Shell strainer & a solid shell. This one is what I call a Road Kill project & I also am glorifying the ugly so to speak. Still gotta find a cloud badge & a lever for the clam, but very happy with the results thus far.

John, that is one beautiful (and happy) drum and one heck of a great job! Those older Aces are cool!
