need help identifying vintage Yamaha drums

Loading...

Hi all...

I recently purchased this set and I'm trying to figure out what exactly it is...does not look like any Yamaha set I've ever seen out of the 70s...I had a mid 70s Yamaha kit that I played on for years, but these look older and with different hardware...any clue on value? info? It has a 20" bass, 12" tom, 14" floor tom and a 14x5 snare with identical wrap. Also if it helps, two of the original bottom heads are still on the drums, and have a Yamaha logo with the words "Nippon Gakki" below that...

I have the same kit but 20 - 13 - 16 - 14 sizes. Late 60's i think. Very good quality especially for MIJ drums from this period. As far as value goes, others here will have a better idea as I'm on the other side of the world, but generally more valuable than most MIJ kits from this era.

There was a kit almost exactly like this on cl here about a year ago. it was the same wrap but the badge said yamaha nippon gakki on it. he wanted $500 for it. I went to see it and it was in his front yard. The bass drum had big gapping holes where the spurs went. I picked up a stand and water ran out of it. He said he just rinsed the drum kit off with a water hose lol

Later on he emailed me lowering the price. his final price was $100. I still didnt want it,

This is a late 60s kit, one of the original runs from possibly 68-69. The wrap is called Red Willow. This kit, once you clean it thoroughly, should bring a minimum of 500, since you have the snare, maybe 750 or more. These older Yammies are gaining in opopularity now and the value is going up.

Thanks Osakabop. I have just started stripping and cleaning my kit and I was amazed to find how great the condition is. With the lugs removed it shows only a tiny amount of fade of the wrap.

The reason these kits are considered to be better quality than other MIJ kits from the same period becomes apparent when you compare the shell construction. Much nicer wood with a tight horizontal grain and although 6ply they are much thinner than my Star and pearl kits (which I love). The photo compares the Yammy (right) to a Star (left). The Star drum is a later drum (early 70's).

I'll put up pics of the kit when I've finished it in another thread. Your kit, 3eyed, will come up looking amazing and I particularly like the sizes. Another forum member (alot2008) has a similar kit in blue willow that he's restoring.

Thanks to everyone for the response. I think I will definitely clean them up and hang on to them then. Great info! One other thing..I seem to be missing some of the original hardware, for example the original snare stand, kick drum pedal, cymbal stands etc. Would this set have come with all of these parts originally? If so, are they hard to find? I'd like to restore the set back to original condition if I can.
