Where do I start?...my new summer project

Loading...

You might as well try removing some of the old finish just to see how easy or difficult it is to get off. If you give up on the stain idea you have not harmed the shell, just wrap them. The quality of the finished product will depend on how good the bare shell is before you apply stain and finish. So you might consider stripping the smallest drum to see what you will have to start with. Problem is with the stain finish, you will really need to find your floor tom ( if thats what you want) and make sure it has the same wood as the rest of the kit.

Nothing wrong with wrap. As mentioned you could buy a piece for the floor tom for later on when you do find one. Wrap would be the easiest choice for you and the drums will look spectacular with most any of the new wraps. And it will still be a great summer project. There is a lot of work taking them apart, cleaning all the parts ect. Whatever you choose keep us informed we love looking over the shoulders of our fellow members. And we will be here to help out when needed.

thanks JC.

know that ive cleaned them up....the stain on the snare and tom look pretty good! No streaks. I just want to "shine them up".

Now..the bass drum..is my main concern...as the pics indicate...those streaks running all over.

What would be best to take of that? If I strip it..what would be best chemical that would not harm wood?

also..what would be best thing to put over the existing head to get them a little more glossy?

thanks!....off day tomorrow..so will something done.

Can you post some pics on this thread? I have actually not done much finish removal but when I did do it I used a product called stripeeze. It works fine but I would like to hear from someone that has done several finish removals and see what they say. But post some pics of the streaks, that will be helpful to everyone.

Thank you!

'Stripeeze', yeah, back in the early 70's I knew a gal like that...

I just read about your fine and generous offer, Jeff. I just wanted to let you know that I would be shipping 19 kits to you in the near future. Since this is a bulk deal, don't you think $20.00 a kit would cover it?

Thanks!

Well the bass drum looks good. How bad was it to get the finish off? How will you match the stain to the other drums? I agree, the tom looks nice as is. Keep going!

Thank you!

Pretty much done with the stain job on the bass drum. Two coats of laquer this weekend. The previous finish/laquer was actually the "easy part". So many items at lowes...I just applied , wait, elbow grease, and it came off.

The headache part was matching colors. Far as I know..this could have been done in 60' or 70's or 80's. The color of the Pioneer snare is cherry redish. The tom is mahogany redish/brown. So, its not a complete color match from the gitgo. I went with mahogany red stain..after buying couple others, just to bring home and match.

Next will put it back together..the Remo 22 heads arrived already.[Attachment:

while waiting for bass drum to dry...started with the snare.

I saw one exactly same color on ebay , going for $195. Same color. But inside the shell there is stain dripping all over...so I think someone restained it at one point. The BADGE has no date..Just LUDWIG at top, and underneath, Ludwig, Chicago, Ill. USA. Was this normal??

Ordered my new batter/reso heads. When I got the snare..Had no batter and no lugs. Headed up to Atlanta to Guitar Center. Told the young dude in drum dept my find...he was like "cool summer project". When I showed him the pics of the day I got it...he was like "SELL ME THE SNARE!" I was like...Im gonna hang on to it for awhile. Play it. He was like COME AND SEE ME..if you decide to sell it...Im the first!.. hahaha. Got a laugh out of that.

So , I put on the new tension rods. See my next obstacle. I have two stripped lugs. After search on internet....I see they are called BOW TIES. Found some dirt cheap at DrumFactoryDirect. $2.69 for one. I saw ebay sellers were selling original ones in sets..going for $75 and up.
