What have I got?

Great help on this site/post. I just came across a 20" Z. Avedis - looks like it' either from the 50's or 70's, but with that tip about the 3 dots in Arabic I'm pretty sure it's a 70's Ride. Gonna try it out - it may replace my vintage Meinl Ride....

thanks

It the lack of 3 dots, not the presence of them. A '50s stamp and a '70s stamp look similar and both have no dots. There is a '60's stamp which contains the 3 dots. If you have a stamp without them, what makes you confident its a '70's cymbal rather than one from the '50's? ?

Mark, I'm referring to the 3 dots that are in the Arabic portion of the stamp, not the ones underneath it. There was a pic about this in the post w/ comment that leads me to believe mine is a '70's pie. Mine has the dot(s) & two dashes under the Arabic. I see what you mean about it being close to a 50's stamp, though. I'll get it weighed at some point, too - maybe that will help. Is there a difference in metal, quality &/or value between the 50's and the 70's cymbals? Thanks

I may be mistaken - looking back up the post now I'm wondering if mine is a 60's stamp - I seem to recall that it looks a lot like the one shown. I'll be able to take another look at the cymbal later.

Without seeing the stamp and cymbal its hard to be sure, but the presence of the dots alone may indicate a variety of choices including large stamps and others from various periods. There are other telltale signs, especially stamp size, letter thickness lathing, etc.

If yours has the 3 dots then it may be a 60s but it could also be a late 70s/early 80s as well. We really need to see a picture for other indicators.

Nice cymbals, Cassidy!

Pictures are essential on the stamps because everything about the stamp is part of determining what era cymbals you have.

Can also be 50's depending on stamp size, fonts and hammering/lathing characteristics.

This is a pretty useless site. Its incomplete, there are no photos and the descriptions are too vague.

I don't use E how for anything. There is an article on there about how to date 60's Ludwig drums, and it states that the serial numbers were stamped inside the shells, not on the badges,as well as several other innacuracies.

I'll see what I can do about getting a pic of the stamp - always neat to learn more about these things. I sure like how it sounds.
