What do you think will be the next "Classic" cymbal?

Loading...

Old Zildjian stuff is the cat's meow, as are many other premium cymbals that are 50-80 years old....

Considering the stuff that's made today, what do you think has the potential to become the next big thing?

I think that many of the machine made/hammered ones will NOT become all that valuable.... I'm placing my bets on Istanbul (classics) and the now split Agop and Mehmet brands... perhaps Bosphorus...

Any thoughts?

Well...I think the Istanbul Pre-Splits (when Agop was alive and the signatures and names of both guys appeared on the cymbals) have already achieved that status.

Some of the early-run Sabians seem to be inching that direction too.....

Ad some of the discontinued Paiste lines are also getting a cult following.

It's a good question and a good subject for a thread...

....very hard to say, because one wonders whether over time the contemporary Turkish handmades (Agop, Mehmet, Bos, Masterwork, etc) will actually start to lose quality or become more standardized or just consumed....and therefore the void will be filled by something else....) Could also happen that one actually goes under (Masterwork being the most likely candidate) which could actually then make 'em collectible in a decade or so.

I can add that Meinl has discontinued a few lines which were VERY good cymbals (the Amuns, for example...handmade, hand-hammered B8's which are just beautiful; also apparently their original Soundcasters have now morphed into 2 separate lines....dunno why they did that, either).

So it could be that something gets discontinued despite the fact that it was a well-made cymbal with a small, loyal following. The Turkish companies seem to be able to weather that sorta thing just fine and not nix good lines...but it seems the bigger a company is, the more likely for them to axe a series if it just doesn't sell to their expectations....regardless of the quality of the cymbal itself.

Along that line, I remember that a forum member contacted Zildjian with a question recently, and they referred to cymbals as "units".

Some of that "Big Company" jargon.

Spizz.

Because When Spizzichino is gone, Spizz cymbals become extinct. Sort of like what happened with the old K's, but the K's will still be the most sought after of all cymbals, without doubt.

I think we need to clarify what it is that you mean by "classic".

By classic, do you mean a cymbal that's going to be highly sought after and collectable?

I think Drumaholic hit the nail on the head with this one. The Spizzichino's currently just have the awesome sound, wobble and craftsmanship that is going to be sought after. They're expensive now as are the old Zildjian K Istanbul Turkeys. I believe there will be other brands that are going to be popular/expensive like the Paiste 602's that are currently getting up there. :2Cents: Jaye has alot of knowledge of cymbals I've never heard of or tried so my two cents is really only like a cent and a half!
