WFL Snare Question

Hi all, I bought this drum and haven't received it yet. It's on it's way. It's a 7" deep shell and I've never seen a 7" deep shell with these type lugs before. Perhaps I am imagining things, but to me it looks as if the WMP wrap is a little lighter between the lugs which could suggest that originally it had Zephyr lugs or tuxedo (bow-tie lugs) I know this 16 lug configuration has been used on WFL drum namely the Symphonic, Ray McKinley and School Festival models. Also I am not sure if the holes for the internal muffler are factory or not. It looks as if it has been drilled for a Radio King muffler or similar unless WFL did use an internal muffler that would fit those holes. There is a WFL p83 Strainer and WFL butt plate, but there is another hole where the strainer is which I believe is one of the original holes for a p87 Super Classic strainer that might have been on this drum. What are your thoughts on the hardware on this drum? Original? Or a decent job at restoring an old WFL shell with almost correct hardware?

Thanks in advance.

Zephyr lugs and classic lugs don't have the same size holes. Also it is probably a 6 1/2x14" school concert. the tone control holes are correct for this tear model drum.

Thanks for the info. So if the Zephyr lugs were original to this drum then somebody would have to drill extra holes for these classic lugs? I did assume it was 6 and a half myself. Often people will just measure from hoop to hoop and say yeah it's 7 inch when the shell is actually 6 and a half, but looking at the spacing in-between top and bottom lug it seems like a bigger gap than you'll see on a 6 and a half shell. Would you think this drum originally had a Super Classic strainer? And if so then should it have a different butt plate? Thanks again.

I meant to say it's a school concert model, the strainer may have been changed but the butt end is correct.

I was right to have my suspicions about this shell. it's 14 x 7 and the lugs are not period correct to the shell, nor is the strainer. Seller says he tried a p87 classic strainer on there, but that didn't fit the hole spacing so it was drilled for a p83. I'm guessing this one originally had Zephyr lugs and neither p83 or p87 Classic Strainer fit the original holes for strainer. The Badge says WFL CO Drums and not WFL Drums like mid to late 1950's. With the info that I have I am able to deduct that this snare is a Paramount or some concert snare and originally had Zephyr lugs or possibly bow-tie lugs, but catalogs show that any 14 x 7 shells either had Zephyr lugs or tube lugs and not classic lugs or bow-tie / butterfly lugs. You can actually see in the photos above that the WMP is lighter in color where the original lugs once were. My question is if it's not a p83 or p87 Classic strainer then what strainer should fit that hole spacing. It seems the original hole spacing is just a little bit smaller than the hole spacing for a p83. If you had any information on WFL strainers that aren't P83 or P87 please let me know. I'd be very grateful for any info. Thanks

This is great info. Thanks. I think the drum I bought could have started out life looking like one of these. What is that strainer though I wonder. As the drum sits it kinda looks like a Leedy Broadway. The 3 ply mahogany shell wouldn't be too dissimilar either I'm guessing.

Could this be another possibility? It's a 6.5" shell though
