WFL Clubbie Project

Loading...

So, after reading about Purdies clubdate project for his grandson, I have finally had the fire lit under me to re-do my WFL clubbies. I have had the kit for a couple of years waiting for the time, money and motivation to make it shine again. It came to me as a mess. The kit was the victim of a very poor re-wrap in the 80s with thumb tacks holding down the seams on both toms and the kick. Vent holes had been plugged and drilled in new locations and no badges. The sizes are 13,22, with a classic 16 FT. All shells are dated 1958. Bass drum hoops were painted white with the inlays stapled multiple times to keep them in place. I have added a 14" FT to the mix and bought badges for all. Today I ordered the deep green glass wrap from Jammin Sam and will be stripping the old wrap starting tomorrow. Hoping to have the kit finished within a month depending on available free time.

Pics coming soon.

Thanks again Purdie for the motivation!

Hi Jeff. Things are great here, hope they are good for you. I am having a good friend of mine help me with the wrap. I want them done right and I hear that the glass is a little harder to work with. I will be there to learn for the next project that I decide to do. BTW your rogers kit has come a long way from when I saw it on the shelf. Real beauty!

Bob - Cool project, I'll be following your progress. You'll probably finish yours before I can get mine done, so I'll get a good preview by checking out your kit.

Break a leg... and post some 'before' shots when you can. Looking forward...

Well, I finally got the wrap taken off the shells. You just have to love contact cement. It took me 2 1/2 hours on the bass drum alone and my hands look like I was juggling razorblades. The new wrap showed up today from Jammin Sam, its awesome! I think it will look great with the nickel hardware. I am still not able to load pics, but I am taking them as I go along. I start the chemical strip tomorrow and hope to start wrapping this weekend. Pics soon, hopefully.

Good to hear the wrap came, thats always fun seeing it for the first time. Is it thick and brittle or is it like the normal stuff. What chemical will you use to remove the old glue? Someone mentioned using a giant eraser and rubbing it off dry. I think they were talking about the big belt sander dressers. I used xyelene on the Rogers, it works but its messy. Have fun!

Bob - 3M makes a spray-foam stripper that will melt the glue right off with one application. Like Jeff's method, it is messy. But it all comes off pretty easily with the stripper. Try it on a small area. If you like the results, go for it. I generally use a scraper/putty knife to get the glue and the stripper goop off.

Be careful with the glass wrap, it -is- more brittle than regular wrap. I like to clamp a piece onto the shell and leave it like that for a day or so. Helps the wrap to relax and take the shape of the drum so I don't have to manipulate (push/press) it so much when it is applied to the shell.
