In my opinion,....Bass drums should always have two heads. You need to offset the tone of the concert toms with the floor and bass drums.
Turning concert toms into closed toms

These 20" bass drums sound terrible without the front heads.

Poppy, those are so freakin sweet! I always been a closed tom guy myself
but after listening to some classic rock more these days, I do see the
coolness in having a nice set of open toms! Keith Moon would love your kit!
Party
Oh I'm a closed tom guy also. This is the way my friend played these with the exception of the tom holders. He had the regular tom holders in the bass drums. I like the tom stands better. heres how he had it. All my other toms have bottom heads

OK stupid question time,....
....Why is it that all these used bass drums that show up have duct tape on the batter head ?? Is this as creative as they can get to stop from going through the head ??

On these 20" bass drums, he had a piece of sheepskin taped to the head to muffle all the horrendous overtones of them. Putting a piece of tape on any drum head will muffle the drum. Its a very wide spread practice of drummers everywhere. Some months ago I bought a DW solid shell snare. Its about a $800 snare. I put a Evan's dry snare head on it and it sounds killer!! The 1st other drummer that played it put a piece of tape on it. I didnt appreciate that at all. I told everyone, if they dont like my snare the way it is, to bring thier own!
