Thoughts on Suspension Mounts for Toms

Loading...

Oh boy! ANOTHER suspension mount thread. I'll save us all some time:

1. They DO enhance resonance at low tunings, but some people either don't hear/want the extra resonance or tune their drums so high that the effect is negligible. Also, in order for it to have its full effect, you need to take off the original mounting hardware.

2. They make something vintage look newer, which takes away a slight bit of mojo, true, but the result is sturdier mounting in the case of otherwise "I wonder when is this old hardware going to fail me?" situations. Some people like the streamline look and the dependability, whereas some people desire the look of the original hardware or are just set in their ways.

Neither side of the arguments are correct or incorrect. Everyone's opinion is recognized as valued and important, but just as much as everyone ELSE'S opinions. Let's keep this civil, gentlemen...

There are people stubborn on both sides of the issue. Not just on this forum, either. Two conflicting points of view that will never see eye to eye. Throw in a little over-zealous personal attachment to one's passion for their own personal drum sound they've spent years searching for and perfecting, and BOOM!--you have the recipe for a thread blowing up, and the fighters having their coaches jump into the ring to drag them back to their corners...

Nice BDP kit. It looks kinda like my old 66 Super Classic. I am glad someone asked this because I myself was thinking the same as Bunnyman. The old rail consolette sucks. I said it. I was thinking of getting 2 13" suspension mounts for my Ludwig and my Gretsch. I already use a separate stand now for the Ludwig and Gretsch and the mount would probably make the drum ring a little truer. I have a set of 8/10/12/14/16 rims by Gibraltar if anyone's interested.

Mr. Bulldog-

I do like the aesthetics of old hardware, but it SUCKS BALLS!!!!!

I wish the old stuff was as stable as newer, heavier stuff, but it is simply horrible. New stuff is heavier in the trap case, but it makes certain your cymbals don't hit the floor. I like that concept... I would rather lift a bit more than worry about whether my cymbals will be worth a damn after a gig!!!!

I use the rail consolette mount on my 3 Ludwigs kit's for gigging and hardly ever have a problem. I have tried a RIMS mount on my 60's super classic but that made the Bass Drum off balance and unstable. I use DW's 6000 series stands so mounting the Tom off of the Crash stand was not an option. If I want a specific low tuning then I usually put the Tom on a Snare stand. If you use heavy stands them a RIMS mount makes sense to me.

For the Floor Toms on my Luddies I use Pearl Legs with those Rubber Air-suspension feet. They're brilliant. I think you can just get the feet in packs of 3 now, but either way Pearl use the same gauge rods as Ludwig so it all fits. Makes my Luddies sing all day. I love them and you can't see them and they're cheap as chips. I think for Bunnyman that they may just fit old premier legs too.

Sir, you made me laugh out loud with this response. That was real horrorshow.

Glad I could give you a laugh. Unfortunately, I am this unfiltered in real life, as well. It used to cause me some problems with a few people when I was younger...

The reason why I hot rodded drums even back when I was dumb and young (like putting a RIMS mount with Pearl hardware onto an otherwise MINT Pre-CBS Rogers, then trying to recover them) was that I hated the way the hardware would loosen after just a few songs. Of course I was in hair metal, then punk bands. While I am playing neither genre these days (though my hair is bigger now than in the '80s)- I like the security of the newer hardware. Maybe when I am old and play jazz I will use traditional hardware that is of the same vintage as my drums...

Some people like the rail consolettes so much that you can buy them new. I never played a kit old enough to have a rail consolette.

Gauger makes a new fitment that allows for really, really low tunings on snare basket-mounted toms. Though the bunnyman institute may have to make its own version (as I have been known to do) to see if it can be made it better and cheaper...

I am going to use the knock-off floor tom suspender 'cos I am too cheap and impatient to get the proper Premier fittings (and I don't want to drill for new ones). I realise that there's no springs (like on the Gauger version which is $100 USD more expensive); but I will get those air feet for the legs. Thanks for the suggestion.
