Stef, thank you for the directions to the vote, I 'll follow them and set it up! The finish on the Oaklawn era double bass prog rock set is Silver Glass Glitter. It was just over $1200.00 for the wrap and custom made 7x10" shell. Most of that went to the 2 24s, 2 16s and the 16x18. The Glass wrap for the smaller rack toms was reasonable, but got real expensive real quick when getting up into the larger sizes. Ryan has the drums and wrap so we are just waiting on the labor at this point.

Lol...That's funny...I specifically bought shells that no one else seemed to want. Most of the Oaklawns were bought about a year ago when you could get the rack toms, 12s and 13s for 150 to 200.00. The prices on them since have skyrocketed. Including Ryan's 4pc. set which was available on this forum with no takers....Nobody else wanted it....Man I did! When he shipped me all the hardware to start cleaning it up, I noticed an added bonus of all the lugs being chrome over brass. Yep that's right Brass lugs! When we found out for a fact that the bass drum was an absolute factory issue, I offered to sell it back to him for the same price since there are only 3 of them (24" bass drums without re-rings) known to exist worldwide. There were a few orphans I bought just to get the hoops. That may be crazy to some, but the hoops are hard to find still in round and that don't need to be re-chromed. One of the 4 floor toms was only $99.00 plus shipping and was originally purchased as a gift but then when it arrived it had too many problems that were not disclosed and the recipient never would have put that kind of money into it to bring it back to life.( I would have been embarrassed to gift that thing..) But wait and see what Ryan can do with it, and the rest of those unwanted orphans...I know he is going to create an absolute work of art. His talent and skill are on the Artisan level as we saw with the snare drum he built. That's precisely why he will be the one doing all of the work on the Oaklawns And the L.A. era Prog Rock Sets/Kits.

I just sold a 1961 Round Badge in that finish,... very classy.

1200$ is a lot but that's what you get doing this amount of shells I guess.

Yes it was expensive but that price also included the two custom made 10" tom shells and was worth it to me. Gary at Precision drum co. was really helpful and everything was perfect. I'll be calling him again when I get to the WFLs. Camconut...Lol...yeah I am for sure nuts about Camco's...Like you are not? Or anyone else that has ever owned a set? What about Dolfan, fishwaltz, or Stallwart or what about Purdie Shuffle? say something bad about them around him and you had better duck! Lol...band3

Very cool project you guys have going. It will be fun to watch the progress. I know nothing about Camco drums so this will be a good education for me.

Jeff that may be, but you know everything about staining to match, and If that finish wins the poll...well I am sweating just thinking about it. How do you get them all to match? I love the Walnut Stain but that's got to be The most difficult finish to get each shell to come out looking the same... Thoughts? Tips?

You have brought up a very good point. With all of the shells being orphans it will be hard to get a consistant color using only stain. The best way to achieve a uniform color in my oppinion would take several steps. I would use a dye first, then stain, then a clear sealer coat, then 2-4 coats of level sealer with a shading addative mixed into it, then the final clear gloss.

I guess wait and see what you have after unwrapping all of the shells. If they all look like the same wood and color then you might get away with just conditioning the shells with a clear stain then applying the walnut stain. But if you dont want all of those headaches then consider wrap. If you lived closer I would be happy to help you out with the finishing.

Super, Thank you and man does that ever sound complicated, (Ryan I hope you are reading this? lol...) Note: Ryan has the use of a factory paint shop/paint booth.) fortunately most all of the L.A. era Camco shells are natural maple finish and have a high quality outer ply. Only 2, possibly 3 of the shells that will be used have the old chipped and badly faded AC White, no wrap to deal with. Also I have since decided not to re-wrap the only shell I have that has wrap . The Oaklawn studio snare drum model# 701-EP (For the Oaklawn era 10pc. prog set) and to leave it factory faded and original. Just can't do it! I will use my other snare drums instead. The HG Piano Black Oaklawn Concert Aristocrat should sound great look good with Silver Glass Glitter.

Well guys, I spent time yesterday cutting wood plugs to fill all of the mount holes on the toms and bass drums. My goal is to fit the plugs to the drums and not modify the drum shells at all. I want the plugs to fill and fit perfectly. I recently purchased a set of plug cutters for the smaller hole plugs so I can get away from having end grain from using dowels. I will post some pictures soon. Just getting some of the "boring" work out of the way.
