Tama Imperialstar

Hi folks!

Well, a couple days ago, I bought a used Tama kit, and as far as I know, it is vintage but, I dont know the exact year.

The tom mounting system looks exactly like the Pre-Tama, Star kits, but the badges are clearly Tama Imperialstar badges. So my personal guess would be between 1973 and 1977, just after the brand changed the name to Tama (circa 1974-5).

The serial is: 50817

Well... If someone knows the exact year of production, please, help me, and well, if im wrong in any data, please also correct me.

And by the way, I'm planning on refinishing it, and Im still not sure about using a delmar wrap or painting. I want to do this because as you can see in the pics, the finish is damaged a bit, sand yeah, this kit deserves the best look possible. So, opinions concerning this matter would be great also.

Thanks in advance guys!!

Matt

I always caution drummers before they start to "refinish"..Its a lot of work, actually,ITS A LOT OF WORK!!..If you plan on keeping this kit, fine, but dont expect to get your money back for the material and labor. You know,it looks good to me just the way it isSoap Box

There is more response on this forum than there is on that useless Tama forum, regarding this subject..The only thing they encourage on the Tama site is "show us the pictures, and dont try to sell anything"...useless forum imoLame

Actually...

I post this thread on PDF and tama forum...and i got not response.-

Today i´ve investigate a lot, and i found, what it seems to be...a clear answer...

As the catalog from 1973 says (drumarchive.com--Star drums), and the catalog from 1974 says (Tama.com/History), i can say now, after a whole evening figuring it out (lol), that this drumkit is from 1973, because, the mounting system is from 1973 (http://drumarchive.com/Star/), and in 1974 Tama was already using the now common mounting system(http://www.tama.com/history/history_detail.asp?i=14) with the brackets in the toms, and the hex-shaped horns.

But i need an expert in imperialstar-drums who can confirmate mi teory DOH

And about the refinish...i´m actually planning on keept this set...except that i have to sell it for a REAL emergency...but, if this set is so "OLD"(the guy who sell this kit to me, tell me that it was from 1982 lol)...the plan of paint/change the wrap...is almost aborted.

Thanks for your time guys.-

(again, sorry for my english...i hope you can understant this post xD)

Looks very close to the 1974 tama Catalog .

I have more Tama literature, but what are we actually trying to determine?

The exact year?

Here is a 1970 Tama Catalog...

Same color and the same set...

I do agree that your tom system looks like an earlier version, but to say an exact year is almost impossible. Actually most drums from an earlier era have a date range.

Thanks David for this info!!!

Well, aparently is very difficult to say the exact year of "birth"...

Plis, if you can send to me this informations(all the catalogs of imperialstars from 70´s) to my mail...i´ll aprecciate it a lot Jump For Joy

I want to now about the shells of this drum...are they mahogany shells? or another tipe of wood.(I suppose this is shown in the catalogs)

Thanks in advance!
