Actually, that is exactly how RK shells with the wide re-rings were done. One on and one off the re-ring...The holes with the washer imprints are the original holes. You will sometimes find washers with a small part of the edge removed to fit past the inside edge of the re-ring.

Kev.

I didn`t know that, never had these drums before. Drill stations do they same thing all the time and freehand will have differences.

Creighton, use a framing square and line up the cast lug holes on center and compare the small holes to that line. if the small holes were hand drilled useing a hand made jig, there will be minute differences. Then do the same with the small holes to see if the larger holes are out of tolerences.

You should be able to detect one set of holes different than the other in tolerence. If they all line up and appear within tolerence, then the factory did this !i

I give up.

Speculate what you will, measure the thing within whatever tolerances you want, consult your local scientific community, burn a sage bush and chant to the spirits of long dead Slingerland employees.

Perhaps your journey will bring you to the answer...... :)

Peace.......:):)

Ned Foley the Slingerland line production manager was sick that day from eating bad fish his brother in law Carl Gilbert had caught down at Carson fishing pond, Erin Paulson was production manager stand in that day.Now Erin he was a good employee but sometimes he let shoddy workmanship go out the door when it really shouldn't have,, this may explain the mystery hole !?? While I don`t know what ya gave up, I did learn two things from ya in this thread, 1) They aint supopposed to be there and 2) Their engineer Dept. had good weed.

Even if just to mention it,...I`d like to see if he has a oops from Slingy, specially just after enjoying a certain eningeering interest !i

Oddball,

The holes are dead spot on in line on center and consistent distance from the outside rim. No doubt it was a drill station. The 13" and 16" are a match on all measurements. Hole edges on all are the same. Not a "gee lets drill some holes here" deal. Factory all the way.

The 4 holes x 4 on the 20" are also factory drill station. Centers align. Dropped a string line for grins and perfect 12/3/6/9 clock face match.

FFR428,

Don't recall if the "vent" holes on the 13"/16" went through the wrap. That wrap came off 35+ years ago. Do know that the 4x4 holes on the 20" did go through.

kevins,

Thank you for all the information. It is very much appreciated. Taking the time to share is what keeps folks like myself from making fatal mistakes.

Do you recommend African or European sage brush. Just a poor attempt at humor referencing Monty Python :-)

My intent was to sort just what I have here. Don't want anyone to blow a gasket over some old drums. Learned long ago best to research any issue before "fixing" anything. I'm happy have 16 less holes to fill on the 20". Will leave them for the next care taker to sort out.

Again,

Thanks everyone,

Creighton

Nothing special here but I like them.

I have a big bunch of dried white sage that was wrapped around a ceremonial pipe given to my Cherokee "Spiritual Healer" buddy General.

He gave the sage to us after a sweat lodge session with him in Cherokee last summer.

The pipe had been filled with tobacco and given to him in Arizona as acknowledgement of completing another phase of his spiritual healing journey, then wrapped in the sage for his trip back to Cherokee, NC.

We smoked the pipe after our sweat lodge session and he gifted the sage to the recovery center I work for. It's hanging in my office....we use it occasionally when there is a disturbance within the facility.
