Round Badge Clean Up

I am working this in my spare time so this will be slow. Because my "fun" money went to the better half's speeding award I will just be cleaning this kit up and playing it as is. Down the road I will likely do a rewrap but for now it will be as is. Shells are all very true and the edges are cherry. I will have Anchor look them over just to be safe and do any work that is needed (like he has done on a lot of my drums).

Here is a close up shot of the issues that want me to re wrap:

Lots of cracking all over this original wrap and black marks that wont as of yet come off.

I believe these were stored outside. The 12" tom inside looks mint. The bass drum looks also very good with only some rust because of a puncture in the batter head. The floor tom....

So far the bass drum t rods and claws are soaking in some dawn soap and water. If I feel up to it tonight I will strip more hardware. I also gave in and bought the new strainer for this guy.

The cheapest I could get the repro arm was $25. For $88 shipped I got a whole new working part.

Those are nice~! I've heard of people using Dow's Scrubbing Bubbles to clean satin/moire wraps with excellent results. Do search out the do and don't before you try it. Just to be on the safe side. Also I've used Magic erasers to remove many scuff marks from wraps. But not on the satin I have no experience there. I think with the right combination you can get those pretty nice. Hopefully more will chime in for you. Good luck~!

I did try a few little ideas on not so obvious areas of the wrap. Sections under the drum heads are new looking so I have a reference of what to look for. I was think maybe some of my rust remover for some areas or perhaps CLR.

There are many varying ideas (most along the same thought) on how to best restore this wrap. Also based on some date guides my kit would appear to be mid 60's (5 digit serial numbers and rounded screws in the shells for the lugs).

Thanks to a forum member I have the missing 16" hoop soon on the way. I am not picky about original tension rods so I will source some here locally.

Total investment in this kit so far is still under $200 and I have plenty to sell from it that I don't need (Hi Hat cymbals, A Custom Ride and now the parts I am replacing). I really want to hear how this kit sounds and get it ready to play before I decide to invest in a recover. For those who did not read my original post about this kit even with a trade to Maxwell drums I would be well out of pocket vs. my investment on the high end even doing a recover professionally.

Based on my experiences so far with restoration I know most if not all the chrome I can get a solid 9 out of 10. Floor tom being the roughest of the lot. Bass drum hoops I can retouch and the wrap will get as clean as possible. If I still lived in FL or if I had some serious sunshine I could use tricks I found online or that I have done in construction.

Dawn soap method worked miracles on my Club date hoops so I am doing the same for the hardware.

I just finished cleaning up a similar kit. Along the way, I discovered that those heavily rusted mufflers can be made to shine like new, if you dip them in cider vinegar for a few hours. I had some that were rusted worse than yours. After a few hours in the vinegar, I dipped them in a solution of baking soda for a bit to neutralize the acid, then rinsed, buffed off the residual grime, and blow-dried them. They look amazing, literally like new.

Bass drum claws and spurs after a soak in Dawn & water. I also did a quick spray and wipe down with groove juice. The four claws in the worse condition will naturally go under the bass drum. Looking good so far. I have a hoop on the way and then the only missing parts are tension rods for the floor tom.
