looking for help in trying to get arms to tighten up in the bass drum mount. forget what the term is for the parts that tighten down on the threads, but they are down tight and still not grabbing the hex post. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Rogers Swivomatic tom holder help
Are you saying that the hex rods that go into the collett will slide up and down when you tighten the knob? Try putting a little teflon tape on them and see what happens. Teflon tape is easily removable and may just be that added tightness you need or maybe the hex posts are not Rogers??
to be continued I'm sure.....
yes, they're pretty loose. it all looks rogers. the teflon tape is a good idea. there is some old duct tape on the hex. the great canadian fix, but it gums up and too thick. thanks, good idea.
They are indeed Rogers parts, and they are correct... they are also the "later" model Collet Nose's, thus they are CAST and not machined. The cast models tend to suffer micro-cracking over time and loose their ability to tighten/grab on the Collet plates. So... what to do about it? The teflon tape may work... for a while... but the best fix is to REPLACE the actual Collet Noses. The neat thing is,
You can keep checking eBay for Collet Noses, and the CAST models like you have come up quite frequently and in many cases, un-cracked. They tend to sell a bit cheaper then the machined models. A couple MACHINED model Collet Noses would certainly be the long term fix though, and worth the slightly extra expense IMHO. I have three Rogers sets, all mid 60's era, and all with Swivo hardware... haven't lost a Collet Nose yet!

Yep What Tommy said get a couple of machined noses , right now you can get them for 10 to 15.00 bucks, also keep the threads clean on both the noses and collets and use a dab of vasoline on those threads to keep them smooth and working great..
does it make sense to machine these?
johnnyz!...
You can't machine those. I think you might have misunderstood a bit here. The Collet Plates/Mounts are fine!, and that is the part with the threads... the threaded pipe if you will. The Collet Nose is the piece that screws onto the threaded pipe and clamps it under pressure to keep it from turning/moving. It's the Collet Nose's that are cracked/compromised, and the models that you have are the CAST version, and it's those that are most prone to cracking over time. Sometimes the cracks are so minute they can hardly be seen, but they allow everything to slip. So...
You need a couple fresh Collet Nose's, and if you were to grab the machined version, they will last just about forever. Here's what the machined version looks like...http://cgi.ebay.com/ROGERS-COLLET-NOSE-MACHINED-VERSION-NEW-STOCK_W0QQitemZ290388098824QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item439c7abf08 These are BRAND NEW and manufactured to the original Rogers specs by "Al Drew Music" in Woonsocket, RI. You could also just keep looking on eBay as these come up all the time as a lot of guys sell off parts, and you could probably get them a little cheaper. The main reason for the link was to show you what the machined version looks like compared to the CAST version which is what you have.
Tommyp
Thanks Tommyp. The best fix, albeit a little pricey for my budget right now. The bd spurs have the same issue, so i should get 4 if i'm getting. Thanks for the link. The math hurts, but its the price you pay to restore a kit going on 40 years. Better start saving my gig money and get a paper route...
can i get them from Al Drew for 10.00 each?
