I have reinforced all of the lugs on the 9 by 13. I smoothed the bearing edges, putting each edge on the same plane. Even though the inside profile seems correct, the outside profile has been filed “in.” Most of the photos I found for this era Rogers drum show that the exterior edge of the bearing edge is practically on plane with the exterior diameter of the drum. Since someone already tweaked the exterior side of the bearing edge, effectively shrinking the diameter of drum, I left it that way so I wouldn’t have to shorten the height of the drum by whittling down the altered edge. I’ll see if this works.
I attempted to polish the non-original black plastic wrap with Novus 1 and 2. This actually dulled the luster of the wrap. If the drums turn out okay sonically, I will likely recover them. Blue sparkle is high on my list of potential wraps that were used in 1958.
I located some crusty-ish Swivo hardware for cheap on Reverb.com. After treatment with naval jelly and Flitz polish, they look pretty good.
I put new heads on the top and bottom, and placed low to moderate tension on the heads. So far so good. 16 by 16 and the bass drum still to do.
