Resting Comfortably

Oh yeah... B-12, Glucosamine and multi's... That's my regimen! Frankly, it's the only way I can get through a gig anymore. I hardly ever drink anything stronger than coffee nowadays. The only thing I notice is my right ankle gets sore after a couple hours. I pop a couple aspirin (my drug of choice) and keep going. We've started hiring kids (late teens) to help with the set up / tear down. We each kick in ten bucks or so... by the end of the gig, we all swear it's the best ten bucks we've ever spent. Our average age is around 61. Yep, getting old is a pain, but the wisdom... oh yeah...

Naps! Yeah baby!

A bit ago, stopped on the way to a gig for supplies. Bought Motrin, Gatorade & Tiger Balm. Talking to the clerk, reflected "the drugs were a lot more fun in the old days". Doesn't help that the gig that nite was with my surf band, "The Dentures".

John: I'm into the water, too. Actually, it's all I drink. I shouldn't be complaining though. Our female vocalist had to work her normal job from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm both days prior to singing from 9:30 pm - 1:30 am. Talk about burning the candle at both ends!

2 1/2 hours is barely enough time to, get home from work, eat, poop, change cloths and get to the gig. She has a good work ethic. I respect that. Women can work real hard and never complain. Can't say the same for 'some' of their male counterparts though. lol

Too many great drums to list here!

You gigging guys are scaring me. I was hoping to join a band in a couple years (after I get good enough) and do a few gigs myself. Im 50 now is it too late to consider the gig scene?

She actually has a GREAT work ethic!Bowing She manages two restaurants, has two kids of her own, has legally adopted three others and still finds time to sing in the band with a bunch of old geezers. On top of that, she's probably got more talent than the rest of us combined yet has the most humble attitude I've ever seen.

Too late? Never. Heck, you're just a baby! Get out there and have some fun like the rest of us. You've got plenty of good years left.

Jeff - Don't wait until, "you get good" before you hook up with some other musicians.

1. Life is short and 'tomorrow' is never a guarantee that you'll still be here.

2. I've been playing for 50 years and I'm still not satisfied with my own playing. Nobody is. Even if you stink, you may as well get out there and stink it up with the rest of us!

3. The fastest way to learn and progress as a musician is -not- by sitting in your basement or garage practicing alone, endlessly. The fast track is getting out there and playing with other musicians. You'll learn more in 6 months of jamming with a band than 5 years of practice by yourself.

Times a-wasting buddy! If you know someone who plays guitar or keyboards or even a kazoo, invite them over for a play. That's how bands get started.

Best case scenario - You'll be playing out in about a year if you get lucky and fall in with a good bunch of guys.

Worst case scenario - Little by little you'll put together a group of musicians who get together fairly regularly just to jam. But... you'll be playing, making music and having a blast.

Get out there. Do it. There will always be guys who are better than you. But, the good news is; you're probably better than a ton of guys who are already in bands and playing out. Don't hesitate. Tell me you never heard a drummer in a band playing and said to yourself; "Damn, I can do better than that!"

OK, I love the phrase, go out and stink it up with the rest of us, made me laugh.

I know what you are saying is true because I have "jammed" with different groups of guys. The last time that happened was in 1985 in Denver Colorado, I moved there to find work, but took my drums. So you are right I just need to get out there and I know that. What I need is a group of guys who can focus on the music and not on the beer. So. in short I am practicing at home but at the same time thinking of how I will find these other musicians and what we will be palying. I would fit in well with a blues, Rock or even a Jimmy Buffet style band. To give you an idea of what I like, John Hiatt, Van Morrison are my favs. So I hope to soon get going on that but at the same time not going to jump in with the first drummer hungry band I find.

John, thank you for the advice, I need to hear that!
