Remove Spray Paint from Chrome?

Loading...

I just got my hands on a 26x14 late 70s Slingerland marching bass drum I'm going to do a little kick conversion to.

Some dope spraypainted the shell red and lugs gold...did a really poor job. But...the silver lining (bad pun) is that it's a chrome wrap underneath! So hopefully not too hard to get the paint off (its already chipping). The inside of the shell is beautiful.

Anyone have any experience stripping spray paint off a chrome wrap or lugs?

Read a little about Zip Strip, Goof Off and the like...but if anyone has any advice, that would be fantastic.

For those interested....

I took a little non-acetone nail polish remover on a towel to the shell last night. The paint started coming off completely, but took some considerable elbow grease. It worked, but I think there must be a better way. Probably paint thinner once it gets warmer and I can work outside...

Why not use paint remover / stripper ? It's on chrome, you don't risk much. Even on wood, it's pretty safe.

Get some paper towels and fold them several times. Lay paper towels on rim, pour laquer thinner on paper towels. let soak 10-15 minutes, then wipe paint off of rims. "warning" Procedure should be done in a well ventilated area, or you can do it in a closet and get high as a MF!!!!

Use Lacquer thinner. Saturate a soft cloth with lacquer thinner and let the rag sit on the painted surface to soften the paint.

I aquired a Ludwig marching snare a few yrs go. It had been painted green with yellow pokadots, but who ever painted it did R&R the lugs. They painted right over the keystone badge too. I restored it to its original glory with red sparkle. It turned out very well. here a link to the thread i did on that drum

It would be a good idea to experiment before you go all out removing the paint. Im not all that familiar with chrome wrapped drums. I recommend removing all the lugs from the shell and try what ever you choose on a area under a lug, and see what it does to the finish. Then get a plan and get er done!!

Good call Poppy,...The denatured alcohol is for cleanning the CHROME,..if you use it on the vinyl,..it will desolve it,..the title is a little misleading, chrome wrap is prolly still vinyl undernieth and should not be cleaned with denatured alcohol. The old spray paints are almost always alcohol based and the alcohol will not harm the metal/chrome. Of course ,use proper ventalation and skin coverage !!

thanks for the advice everyone!

I think I'll give the rag + lacquer remover route once it gets warmer out.

i live in an apartment and have no workroom / garage to mess around in.

i'll post photos for those who are interested.
