Remove Spray Paint from Chrome?

Loading...

You may want to try Smart Strip. It's plant based and very low odor. I've used it on aluminum that had a thick layer of of oil based paint and was quite impressed. Brush it on, wait a few minutes, wipe it off, repeat as necessary. Very user friendly product. I haven't used it on vinyl or plastic. May be worth a try. Check with a retailer that sells better quality house paint. I found it at a local Pittsburgh (brand) dealer.

I bought an old Ludwig hi-hat stand off of ebay maybe a year and a half ago (I've since sold it) and it was painted with that "chrome" spray paint! Eye Ball I used lacquer thinner and a rag to remove the paint. It did not affect the real chrome underneath in any way. BTW....the "chrome" paint was hiding some rust.....which I was able to remove most of with automotive chrome polish. Some people's kids...DOH

Ok so I've done some serious work on this bass drum the past week or so. I'll post before, during and after photos soon. But here was the process:

Removed heads, hoops and lugs.

Applied 3M Safest Stripper -- This stuff is amazing. NO fumes and the majority of the paint came right off with a plastic putty tool after setting the stripper for an hour or so.

Followed the Safest Stripper with some citrus "stripper remover." This was much harsher than the actual stripper and using that and some # 0000 steel wool the remaining hard to remove paint came off.

Next up, Nevr Dull. Shined chrome up real nice.

I repeated the same process with the lugs (some idiot spray painted them too) and then soaked them, the claws, and all screws in Dawn overnight.

Sure there are some patches of flea-bite rust here and there and some dings and dents. But this is a playing kit I intend to beat the hell out of. It's already looking great.

Seriously you can't go wrong with the 3M Safest Stripper.

Here's some before and after shots of the effects of Safest Stripper.

There were still a few spots where layers of paint had built up. That took steel wool and stripper cleaner to get off.

Once I repaint the hoops I'll post pics of the completed drum!
