After replacing the broken lugs, I don't plan to spend a lot on niggly parts. With them in their current condition, indeed, I don;t see putting a lot of dough into this, but I may try to make some parts to get the strainer working well. I have a small hobby size machinist lathe and may try to turn a knob etc. If I get anything re-plated it will be in nickel. I'll just try rust removal first and go from there. A guy over at cymbalholic restored one of these and mounted a Ludwig P-86 and it looks pretty elegant. If I go that route, 'd have to come up with an adapter though, I am not going to drill anything new into this shell.

On second though I am not going to steam off the re-rings. I'll just reglue them in place.

Garg... I stripped the shell, not only was the re-ring split/repaired, but so is the shell itself. The re-ring split extended right into the shell, and there is a split on the outer overlap of the scarf. It's not horrible but is a bit of a bummer. The shell is still solid, but not quite really appearance grade, and I was surprised to find the exterior of the scarf joint right next to the badge. Not sure whether to just refinish natural as is, paint/laquer or veneer it like my previous slingy refurb like this:

I am a little worried about the diameter though if I add any more thickness. The shell is a true 14" and probably will be a wee challenge for heads other than aquarian american vintage or calf.

The shell is in progress, right now, glue setting up for the re-rings and some epoxy filler for the gaps/cracks, so I'll add a pic tomorrow.

Ben, Wow, that's some good looking wood!! the repaired crack looks very well performed, it will not affect the performance any at all,I know for a fact it will not! man this is going look awesome, and you'll be using this puppy as your main to go to snare drum!!!Jumping2

Soak parts in dilute vinegar overnight, tumble in rock tumbler with super fine grit for about 1/2 hour.

I got all the parts and it is put back together. there were a couple surprises during the work, notably that the throw and internal muffler were bent. Now after assembly I can also see the butt side snare bridge is crooked, and needs to be bent back into proper alignment.

It ain't all new-like and pretty, the metal parts won't look so unless replaced or re-plated, but I don't care a lot, because I really like it's organic old time mojo, and is quite wonderful to play even with the old wires I had around to throw on it. I will need to find some kind of knob for the snare throw, but it is functional enough for the time being.

I'd like to find snare wires to put the bridges into use as designed. I don't want to pay another $40+ for puresounds, wondering if just buying wires for a 15" or 16" snare will work OK. Anyone try this? And for anyone with this snare rigging, what do you like in terms of number of wires 16 or 20?
