Ben, we've already discussed this shell project, you know what to do and you know how to do it, get the required parts, do the repairs, and you'll have a keeper on your hands!!:Jumping2

If the paint is crap I have had great luck using the side edge of a paint scraper. The paint will usually flake right off and the scraper won't leave any gouges in the wood. That means a lot less sanding - especially since the outer maple ply (on ply drums of course) is pretty thin. I used Maloof finishing oil from Rockler on all my RKs and it really make the wood grain "pop." Refinish that snare and play the heck out of it! Mine is like yours except mine has the tin strap connecting the snares. The drum sounds great and you can use it in all kinds of situations.

Hey Chappy, the paint is not flaking, it is tight to the shell. It is just a nasty bad paint job! Anyway, it is not going to just scrape off.

I did scrape just a wee bit with a sharp blade to see if there is any wrap, but it looks like a natural wood shell, no wrap. Which is fantastic, because I really want a natural maple finish anyway!

And no thin ply worries. It is a single ply maple shell.

This is gonna be a nice one... she's in good hands all the way.

Disassembled. Definitely has some repair issues:

1- strainer lever arm screw not tightening. I don't know if there was some kind of nut secureing the thumbscrew or if the arm itself was originally threaded

2- snare tension adjustment knob missing from the screw

3- lotta rust! I might look into re-plating some of the parts.

4- Lugs broken/missing. a couple different ones, looks like some of the originals were replaced at some point

5- Shell re-ring loose, needs to be reglued

6- One re-ring has been broken and repaired in the past. I'll have to see once into the re-ring repair whether it will be worth replacing the entire ring.

Luckily the shell is in generally good nick, only a tiny bit out of round, and there are no extra holes. One hole was filed out when someone put the newer sound king style lug on. I am going to start stripping the shell today

Ben, WOW this ole one has been through it hasn't it!!??. ok the 3 point strainer, the adjustment knob Jim Petty has them and they aren't cheap, the 3 point was probably nickel so I wouldn't re plate that, and the rest of the metal parts that's your call, your going to have a player Rk anyway I' wouldn't go crazy on the restro get the shell right, I'd get it looking presentable and play the daylight out of it. Also it looks as if you have a Hollwood Ace Model On your hands a winner everytime!!!
