Question about drum heads

Loading...

I’ve been thinking about buying a field snare or parade drum to use as a floor Tom to go with my 28 inch Ludwig & Ludwig Pioneer bass drum and my 6.6 X 14 inch Ludwig & Ludwig snare drum. I haven’t found one yet at the right price and also missed some opportunities due to procrastination.

Some of the drums are 17 inch diameter and luckily I decided to check the Remo website and it appears that they don’t have a 17 inch offering. Does anyone have experience or knowledge of where to find a 17 inch drum head? I’m glad I checked before I bought a 17 inch drum.

You might want to double check with a Remo dealer about a 17" head. I special ordered a 17" Fiberskyn about 15 years ago even though it was not listed as an available size in the catalog. Ironically, after it finally arrived, it sat in the box unused as I decided to go with a real calfskin head. Ended up giving it away to a member here who had a 17x12 Ludwig parade drum.

You will more likely find a 15" or 16" parade drum to use as a FT rather than the uncommon 17". Good luck with the project.

There are a few 17" heads on Ebay, used I think...including calfskin. I've got several 17" drums and have never had any problem finding heads. Have never bought any new heads though.

I was in touch with Remo today and getting 17 inch drumheads will not be a problem. They are a special order but they have no problem making them. They also said they will make any size up to 108 inches.
