Plug and rewrap '64 clubdate

Loading...

So when I was 16, I decided the consolette, tom bracket, spurs and clipper legs on my clubdate were not up to the thrashing I was giving them on a daily basis. So I went digging through my local drum shops junk drawers and pieced together a MODULAR bass mount/tom holder, some classic floortom brackets and Gibraltar spurs. While the set was absolutely playable, I had done irreversible damage to the shells.

I did however save the 1" circular pieces of shell I cut out with a hole saw.

I am now intending to plug and rewrap these drums(12,14,20) and an orphan '65 9x13.

I have removed the wrap from the 8x12 and 14x20 and attempted to reuse the 1" holes that I've saved all these years, but I don't know if wood filler is going to do the trick, I believe the preferred method is plugging with dowels. Here is some shots of my attempt at plugging using filler.

The 14x14 has elongated holes where I put classic ft brackets on, but the wrap is tight and in fairly good shape, but I'm sure it's not going to look very yellowed next to a newly wrapped bass drum.

The 9x13 I picked up on eBay was painted black inside and looks like someone used a heavy cleanser on the wrap to remove paint or contact paper, because its all hazy

So a couple of questions, is it that big of a deal to rewrap the 14x14 and 9x13 if the rest of the kit is already "ruined"? Also do you guys think the original plugs and filler will hold once wrapped and painted? Or am I just making problems for this set down the line?

Thats a good question. How about wrapping the other drums first and see how they look with the original's. 14x14 clubdate floor toms are hard to find, right? HAve you heard of retrobright? It is a paste you make that will reverse the yellowing. Here , check this out.

Yeah I saw that somewhere on here before, was thinking of trying it on a wmp combo (12 20)set I have also. I'll have to see, do you think the filler and original "donut hole" method will hold up? I'd like to be sure before I.start putting on contact cement and wrapping.

Im sorry but what is the donut hole method?

Using the original holes I cut out in the first place, I kept them and put them back in with filler.

Oh Okay, geez I should have been able to figure that out. If you reused the peice that was cut out with a hole saw then that peice was to small due to the saw kerf. Looks like the peice is being held by the filler. Filler is not an adhesive, I would feel better if you made a new circle that fits the hole and glued it in. But what you did could work if you use the glue method for installing wrap , not the tape method. That way the wrap will help hold the peice also. Hopefully Billnvick will chime in, he has done more hole filing than anyone here I think.

The repair looks very good, but like Jeff brought up, I'd be concerned the filler would crack. Is there anything available that would make the filler stronger? Something like that liquid wood hardener? If you use the glue method for the wrap, it would provide some extra strength. Plus, you will also be repainting the insides of the shells, which would help too.

I'm amazed that you saved the scrap pieces you cut out. That's impressive. :)

Even at 16yo I knew I was destroying the shells, but I was trying to get into bands, and at the time it's seemed impossible to find new or fix stripped consolette parts. I thought the holes would be cool to save, and put them in a ***elry box I made my freshmen year in woodshop.

I bought the shells for a whopping $40.00 !! And at the time nobody cared about my old cheap ludwig set. Tama art star, pearl Czx and Yamaha recording customs were the flavors of the day. American drums were looked down on.

By the way I intend on gluing the wrap and painting the interiors.

And so far the filler as suspected will not hold.

any pointers on glue products to use would be appreciated!

Forum member billnvick mentions 'rock hard water putty' as his fuiller of choice in his threads. It sounds like he's had some good success with it. I plan to try it out on my next resto project where hole filling is needed. Hopefully he'll stop by and add some comments. He seems like a super nice guy and definitely does some super nice work!

Keep us posted on your progress.

I noticed you have a mounting hole on a cutout that has been re-installed. I would not use that for the mounting anymore. Since you have the badge off, I would suggest, for structural reasons moveing the mount to another spot and fillilg the badge hole and move it accordingly too. Kinda like finninshing re-drilling a blank. Just a thought but it looks like it can be done.
