Need Ludwig & Ludwig info...

Loading...

I'm looking for info about Ludwig & Ludwig drums... Mainly, I'd like to know what finishes were available during what times, and what configurations the drums were available in during those times (size, concert vs double-headed, etc...)

Where is a good resource for this info? I've searched, but just found bits and pieces of info. Nothing really complete.

Thanks,

~Jon

Well, what I'm after is finding out if what I want ever even existed...

I want floor toms... 16" and 18", double-headed with single-ended Imperial lugs (top and bottom).

This is for the dream "Vintage Modern" set that I'm putting together.

I'll be using my later Ludwig (*not* L&L) 32" bass drum that'll match up pretty good for my needs. I have an original white lacquer L&L badge coming that I'm sticking on it. I'd like the toms (and eventually the snare) to be authentic L&L drums though, if possible.

If I could somehow find an original huge L&L bass drum, that'd be cool too... For now, the toms are my #1 priority though.

Well....they did make 16x16 floor toms....and their sister company at the time Leedy made floor toms in that size, as well as 16x18 and 18x20....so it stands to reason that you probably could find Ludwig & Ludwig floor toms in those sizes, but they will be hard to find, that's for sure! I know, because it took me forever to find a 16x16 Leedy floor tom for the Leedy kit that I used to own, and I pretty much gave up on finding a 16x18 as those were pretty much non-existant. I ended up replicating a Leedy 16x18 using vintage Leedy lugs, hoops, floor tom legs, etc and using a Keller vintage maple shell. I just couldn't wait any longer.

Yes those sizes floor toms where available, with double side toms, but not with those t-rods though, since it won't be original you can put them on if you want to! look at this link, this is the year you want to look up until they became leedy ludwig. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_drumsets_1948A.html here is a pic of mine.

what do you mean, "not with those t-rods"? Your drums are EXACTLY what I want, aside from the finish and the fact that the rack tom is a "Clubdate" style, with the center double-ended lugs.

I think he meant literally, "T-rods", as in the t-shaped rods use on the bass drum. As far as the rack tom goes, they were all like that back then. There was no "clubdate" series until much later. All the L&L toms with the Imperial lugs were center mounted like that.

Hmm... well, I'm waiting to hear back about some single headed (no tacked calf skin bottom) rack toms (11" and 13") that have Imperial single-ended lugs. I could have the bottom bearing edge and lugs added to get what I want.

...although I'm not opposed to the center double-ended lugs on small toms.
