Hello all. New to this forum. I'm more a bass player guitarist but I've always had a kit of some sort at my disposal. This past summer, I picked up a 3 piece set of Slingerlands at a yard sale. Thing is, I didn't know it until a few days ago. The drums are covered with a black felt like material (actually a nice job). That day I pulled the felt back enough to see the color underneath but just enough to get an idea (pearl white). I brought them home and threw some hardware and stands together and had at it.

Now, we're in the process of remodeling our house so things are getting moved around a bit. A few days ago I decided to peel back the covering on the mounted tom and I find a Slingerland badge #142678 black with brass lettering.

I've search a few earlier threads and did some other research the past few days and my head is spinning. I'm guessing they're late 60's early 70's. They do have the "chocolate milk" paint I've seen mentioned in other threads as well.

My questions...

Is there a way to bring back the shine of the original finish and should I even do that?? There's no bottom hardware (unfortunately) but you can see the holes for them and the finish that surrounds the holes are really bright. The majority of the finish has a yellowed look.

Is it normal for the badge to be upside down? I took some pictures and had the tom upside down and the badge was rightside up.

I paid $50 for the 3 pieces. 20 inch bass, 16 FT, 12 RT

I'm trying to upload some pictures but the "manage attachment" bar isn't working for me.

Any input would be grately appreciated!

Not really any practical way to bring them back to brand new on the finish.......

It is possible the drum came from the factory badge upside down, but unlikely........

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SPIN IT AROUND! YOU WILL SCRATCH THE FINISH UP!

I have bags and bags of small/large Slingerland lugs, and quite a few rims....if you want to buy them.

Put a magnet up to both rims.........does it stick? If not, they are chrome over brass.

Get some new heads on this kit ASAP!Those heads are TRASHED!

Thanks for the input. Like I said, I'm not a real drummer but I like having a kit of my own. I'll be putting them in storage for the next month or so (parents house) while we get our remodel finished. I just finished reading the Restoration and help section of this forum and (according to the info) maybe it's best to just leave the finish alone. As far as the heads and such, that will be my first project after they return. I may start playing more drums after all.

Been reading up on wrap restoration a bit myself, and it seems that it is not really recommended, and in some cases, preferable to have some yellowing. especially on the WMP. Doesn't look too bad in the pics. How was felt applied? Doesn't seem to have too much residue.

the color your drums have turned is beautiful. many such as myself like the way they have turned a cream white color, also from what I'm seeing your badges are correct they aren't upside down. you can get the parts you need to complete the kit again just post for them in the wanted to buy section.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Starting to wonder if the tom was flipped upside down and the mount reversed?...possibly explaining the badge position. I'm going to peel back the other two later today and see what gives.

They were stitched, and actually done really well. No Glue!

Those Slingerlands have mellowed to a nice classic yellow. Clean 'em up & play. Touch up the bottom bearing edges lightly with some fine sandpaper, get some replacement hardware from Blair, new heads, & you're done. And leave the badge upside down--it gives 'em some personality...marko
