maple dynasonic restoration, help.

Loading...

hello, newbie here. been lurking for years in search of info. thanks for all the help guys. you have helped restore and maintain my collection properly.

ok, on to the question.

i have an 5"x 14" COB Rogers Dynasonic snare. it is one of three. one more 5" and my (shining glory) 6.5"! all COB. i want to convert one of the 5" models into a Maple. (transfer hardware from brass shell to new maple shell)\

several years ago i contacted a man named Craig at MDK about making a replica shell for me. Craig kindly sent me a quote. life however didn't allow this to take place at that time. wife, kid, other drums etc. needed attention.

NOW i am ready to build my maple dynasonic! (before i start another drum project) CANT FIND MDK or CRAIG!

please help if you know another drum maker who can build a proper replica of these funky old shells, with the proper .004 snare beds and bearing edges. wrap also. i can drill the shell, and assemble it myself. in fact i absolutely would love to do EVERYTHING myself but... im not as stupid as i am inept. so ill leave that tough stuff to the pros.

thanks!

Hello ludwigdan and Welcome to the forum!

You'll find a great group of people here, who are very passionate about their vintage drums!

I have a friend, Chris Heuer, who owns his own custom shop in Burbank, CA. I've seen many of his Rogers repairs, where he has to duplicate the bearing edge. They always come out looking perfect! I've never asked him about replicating the Dynasonic snare beds, but I don't see why he wouldn't be up to the task.

Check out his website, where you can find contact information. Good luck... and keep us posted!

Tell Chris that Mark Fenberg says "hi"!!

I just finished a replica. Did basically the same thing your thinking about. But did the work myself. I was told by everyone I asked that there were no snare beds on the wood Dyna so that's how I built mine and it sounds great. I started with the Rogers book by Rob Cook to get all the info I could and then purchased materials from Precision Drum Co.

johnl!

Nice job on the build... and GREAT badge too! Therein lies the difference between what you have done here, and the guy that is TRYING to misrepresent a "clone" as being the real deal. NICE!! You are correct by the way... I have two wood/WMP Rogers Dynasonics, a 1967 and 1968.. and neither has what one would call a snare bed. It was said that the "bed" was approx. the depth of a paper business card, but truthfully it's near impossible to even SEE, if it's even there at all!

I knew there would be SOMEONE who would have an original wood Dynasonic to let us know about those beds. Thanks Tommyp!!

Let me quote Ben Straus from The Rogers Book, page 176: "...We reasoned that you did in fact need SOME degree of of snare bed to allow the head to vibrate down touch the snares. We used such a shallow, and gradually tapered, snare bed that you couldn't even really see it. When Joe Thompson was done with his design work on this he ended up with a snare bed that was only .004" deep..."

That being said, I would think the only way to really SEE if the bed exists is to put it on a perfectly flat table (Chris has a milled granite table for these purposes) and shine a light in to see where the beds extend to and how deep they are.

Now, is there anyone willing to entrust me with their prized wood-shell Dynasonic to test this theory?!! LoLoLoLo

WOW! very nice john. a buddy of mine has a blue onyx kit, i love it! i didnt know it was that minute of a bed. i know .004 is pretty insignificant of a number but i thought it was something wierd that i didn't know about, that had to be done by a pro with special tooling.

thanks for the help guys! looks like i will be building my own silver glass glitter Dynasonic after all! precision drum is about to get a(nother) call!
