+1 on that. Also I found the pics of the Minwax'd 13" silver sparkle snare, so you can see for yourself how well it works, and a pic of the product used.Mitch

That looks great was the minx tinted at all or just straight ?

Warning ... Avoid member statuscymbal here, vintage_collector on DFO , and americanpatriot10 on eBay. Email me for his name. All are the same shady guy who has burned me and a list of other members on both boards . He is also selling on Facebook too ..

Wow, that is a spot-on match. Assume the first pic is the before shot? Nice job.

Since you're just going to patch it [good call], simply give the patch 1 or 2 coats of Minwax polyurethane. If you can find my pioneer cut-down 14" > 13" thread, there's pictures of how it worked on that re-wrapped snare to match it to the rest of the kit [silver sparkle]. I went too far with 4 coats - it darkens more over time - 2 coats max. Wet-sand before applying...Mitch

How did you apply it for an even result, wipe on?

Thanks! I was glad it worked...tint is in the product, brushed on straight from the can, first pic is before shot.

The patient craftsman will apply one coat, assemble the drum a day later, and check the shell for tint-match a month later. Repeat if necessary. I went four coats and the snare a few months later is now darker than the rest, but still better than blue IMHO.

Hello and Thanks to everyone for the great replies

Jeff many thanks for looking into the donor piece

I suppose the best patch would need to be as large as the original top to bottom

and at least wide enough to cover both damaged areas all in one sheet

I could live with the two new seams not being under lug sets

as the donor piece needed otherwise, would be about half the drum

Mitch hello I love the result you achieved with the min wax poly

Thanks so much for the pics and the great idea

Now you started with brand new silver sparkle before the min wax applications yes?

Hello Ateam your approach to the patch process is exactly how I imagined as well .......Thx pal

Hello human71

I agree with you about the wood finished kits

In my case I have sort of an over abundance of black drum kits

But the mahogany or walnut finished drum kits do appeal to me also

Its funny I started with a partial red sparkle club date kit

I had no floor tom and after some near misses and much looking

I found this 14x14 fully complete club date floor tom

The drum started life as a duco finish and at some point was refinished as it is here

My plan was always to recover it in red sparkle to match those project drums just mentioned

knowinig already that wrapping a former duco shell might likely create problems fitting standard sized heads

At the same time I had been buying some new old stock Japanese floor toms from another fellow

During one of our phone conversations he mentioned he had the silver sparkle floor tom shell with a badly damaged wrap

I figured I would use that for the red sparkle re-wrap and leave this stained drum as is for some future wood finished project

In between the time I bought that silver sparkle FT shell and its actual arrival

I happened on the 65 silver sparkle partial

bass, mounted tom, and jazz fest snare, needing just a floor tom

when put together as a full kit the floor tom luckily matched the others as would a born together kit with some age

So the stained floor tom was wrapped in the red as originally planned and the silver sparkle floor tom is now the subject to this thread
