Like the others mention, maybe spin that area around towards the backside. Maybe your stick bag would cover it nicely? That's what I would do anyway.

Thanks everyone

I may have jumped the gun here

I decided earlier this morning before reading the last few replies

to go ahead and have the drum re-wrapped in new silver sparkle

I already gave Anthony at Village drum the green light to order the material

I liked the idea of trying to do a patch and then turn it toward the back

as the front is mint save for the ginger ale but it seemed to me early on,

that I might be the only one that thought that was a viable solution

for me doing nothing with regard to the damaged area save for turning the drum around would not do either

That amount of unsightly damage would have just haunted me too much

so I figured the re-wrap to be the only option that seemed to make any real sense

As I read these few latter replies I sorta wish I had waited longer to decide but oh boy

Now the upside will be the 14x14 floor tom will look amazing

But I know it won't blend with the others as well as with the original wrap that massive area of damaged wrap aside

As I look at the above contrast photos the new wrapped floor tom will likely look okay against the bass drum

but much less matched to the 12"

Good luck with the re-wrap. Have Anthony save the old wrap, just in case...:)

Hello gwm Thanks for the great replies

After posting the above message I was less and less sure about the re-wrap

Rather than call, I drove over to Village drum to speak with Anthony

to my relief he was very gracious about the situation and understood my indecision

so I have my shell back for the time being and I am hoping to find the patch material

perhaps someone stripped a silver sparkle bass drum or floor tom and has some similar looking donor material ??

I was thinking this has to be a somewhat common issue with the vintage silver sparkle

the ginger ale effect that is ...

I have a peice, but it probably not enough. I will measure it tomorrow because im not home now. I used it for ky Camco repairs. It was from a snare drum, so it has a bunch of holes, not mention I used some of it. But ig you can use it, its yours.

Thank you!

Since you're just going to patch it [good call], simply give the patch 1 or 2 coats of Minwax polyurethane. If you can find my pioneer cut-down 14" > 13" thread, there's pictures of how it worked on that re-wrapped snare to match it to the rest of the kit [silver sparkle]. I went too far with 4 coats - it darkens more over time - 2 coats max. Wet-sand before applying...

Maybe i'm just going through natural wood finish/lacquer phase, and i know you've already made your decision, but i've always loved wood finishes. If it were me, I would have done away with the original wrap, and have it finished in a nice lacquer finish, either natural or black. I know it would heart wrenching to get rid of the original wrap, but you would have a beautiful, much more resonant sounding kit, with a classy finish that would never go out of style.. I know, it would be a crime to even think of such a thing, but as i said before, that's just me. I wouldn't care so much about the original finish as i would the condition of the drums themselves. Imho, nothing beats a natural wood finish on a vintage kit, especially a club date. Whatever the case, good luck with project !Cool1

If it were my drum, I'd try to patch it. I'd either look for an inexpensive donor shell, or as DownTownFarmer suggested, try some new wrap with a thin coat of polyurethane to simulate the tarnish effect. You might suggest this approach to your guy at the drum shop. I would absolutely not re-wrap it tho. Another thing in your favor is that the damage is right at the seam. I would suggest trimming out the damaged area vertically from top to bottom on either side of the damage, and then replacing with the new wrap. You will end up with two vertical seams in place of one. I think you would be very pleased with the result.

The wrap I have would match good but its too small unless you pieced it together. You could get three 4" x 4.5" pieces out of it but I doubt you want to do that.

+1 on that. Also I found the pics of the Minwax'd 13" silver sparkle snare, so you can see for yourself how well it works, and a pic of the product used.
