This wasn't common with vintage kits as a wrap... However, the "Duco" paint scheme was quite popular, which kind of mimics that striped look (usually with a bit of a fade).
A few years ago there was a resurgence in layered or striped finishes, mostly from boutique builders that eventually some of the major manufacturers picked up on. But the fad seems to have passed in favor of whatever the latest finish of the day is now.
