I posted questions on the main forum, but wanted to share the pictures on this post. One of my 8 lug snare options is seriously messed up. Snare beds nearly half way around the drum! This project is turning into a fair amount of work.

Spent several hours on these drums today. More pictures to follow, but here's how i handled a 3/8 inch hole. It is the bottom strainer hole, which has been enlarened to make room for the MIJ strainer that the previous owner added. I did not want to use a dowel or filler alone, since there will be a small hole drilled right through it. Using a drill press and forstner bit, i carefully bored about 1/16th of an inch deep, then cut a small circle out of a piece of maple veneer. I glued it in place, then filled the rest of the hole from the back with 2 part wood filler/epoxy. I will post the results later. Might work... Who knows.

Thanks. That means a lot coming from a guy with your talent!
Today, I also sanded the shells with 320, then sprayed 3 light coats of black Duplicolor sandable primer. This stuff is a dream to work with. Recoat in 10 minutes. Sand in 30 minutes.

I sanded the primer with 1000 grit, then sprayed two light coats of Duplicolor gloss black lacquer. I will sand this lightly tomorrow and add at least two more coats.

Jim that's a great idea on the hole repair. Nice job and these are looking really good too!! Fun times. :)
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.
I just can not get back at this project. I need to spray outside due to fumes and need humidity under 70%. Yesterday would have been perfect, but i was gone with the high school marching band from 8:00 am till 2:00 am. Today looks like rain all day! Arghhh

I will play these drums on our New Year's Eve gig. Might be a combo of chrome and nickel hardware - but I'm determined to make it happen!
