Ludwig Clubdate Overhaul

Loading...

I recently became somewhat obsessed with Mike Layton's Clubdate set in black lacquer & nickel as shown below. So... About a month ago I began buying Clubdate orphan shells for the project. For some reason, i am only able to attach one picture to each post. See the next post

Super sweet! I have a club date project kit ready to go to Jeff for a mahogany veneer job! Gotta love clubbies, the most fun kits to restore or customize. You always end up with a great looking and sounding set of drums.

Really nice job on those!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

The 14x14 floor tom and 8x12 rack tom came from ebay. I was very pleased to buy both of them within 2 weeks. I really thought it would take months to find a duco floortom in this size. I really did not want to deal w stripping wrap.

I assumed incorrectly that the 14x20 bass drum would be an easy find. Wrong!

It turned up locally, but was priced somewhat higher than expected. The combination of nickel hardware, no extra holes, correct size & no shipping cost made my decision easier.

Sorry for the string of posts. I can only attach one picture...

The lacquer on all 3 drums is flaking badly.

The bass drum is the worst. Guessing that half of it could be removed with a dry paper towel.

Was just thinking "what is it about Club Dates?". Played mine tonite. The tom's are just great. The bass has that sound that just works for me. Add either my mahogany WFL snare, or KS Acro, and I'm done. Does it get an better then this? Something about the lower end kit that goes way above it's pay grade. PLus, they're light and an easy setup......

light and easy to set up...

That's why I like them too. I will be gigging my other clubdate Saturday at a small boat club. Usually a very small stage...

Cant wait to see them. I have a Ludwig "combo" clubdate, 20" bass, 13" tom and a jazz fest all in sky blue, no floor tom, thats why its called a combo.

Will you post pictures of the progress please, its fun to watch.

Jeff C

John, any luck finding a jazz fest shell?

Thank you!
