On my 16 inch I simply have 16 inch snare wires (made for 16 inch snares). I bought them from a Dutch custom builder, he also sold me a thin snare reso head 16 inch. Wasn't able to buy those from normal company's.

I know pure sound or gibraltar make snares for 14 inch drums with extended snare mechanism, those are 16 inch long too.

Premier maybe (for their flobeam mechanisms?)

Craviotto makes 16 inch snare-drums. Also saw a youtube video with a 20 inch snare by Craviotto! Sounded pretty good!.

Maybe a drummer-friend is gonna give me a thick beech Sonor floortom shell 16 inch. Planning to cut 3 or 4 snare drums out of it, customize them and make some kind of business of it.

Thanks and sounds like a good plan bartw. I myself in the past year started a drum repair / restoration business. I'll do custom snares too, but I try and go for crazier ones. Such as the 16". I think It's time for a new project.....

From Kona

Richie - that's a very cool old bass drum. Kind of like a 'nesting' drum - I like it

From jccabinets

Way cool! I did not know they made drums like that back then.

Thanks!

...and...thanks!!

From ARCHxANGEL

I thought I was crazy for wanting to make a custom 16" snare. Now, perhaps not as much as I thought. Or maybe as much, but just means others are too? What wires do you have on that bad boy?

I sold this one after owning it for a few years. The new owner is a music instructor (percussion) at McEwan University. He loves the drum - it went to a good home. But, I do miss it. A 16" 1925 Wilson Brothers snare. It has USN (United States Navy) stamped on the shell. I contacted the Navy (Music Department) in Washington DC and they told me it was likely in their inventory at one time. I do miss the drum - lovely wood hoops and beautiful tone. I tucked a slunk calfhide on resonant side and a nice orchestral calfhide on the batter.

For the benefit of this thread - this drum is a bit of a rarity and not unusual other than its 16 inch diameter.

That strip of wood running the center on the inside is beautiful. That drum is simple, functional and elegant. The way they should be.
