I bought this 1962 Leedy 18/14/12 set with the idea of removing it's badly done green wrap with something classy. To my surprise under the wrap I found furniture grade walnut veneer! Wear marks indicate that the set was played for some time with this veneer before being wrapped at least once more before it's final green incarnation. The walnut has been patched in places and the overall look is one of a very well done home grade installation.

That wood grain looks wonderful. I assume it sounds nice.

So, sorry, the walnut veneer is the original state of this kit? It was wrapped once before the green wrap was applied? Wow and lovely.
Cool kit...looks great!

Inside of the shells are stamped with a P which indicates they were originally pearl covered. While removing the green wrap I found damage to the veneer indicative of a previous, not so careful, wrap removal job. No further damage was caused by me removing the green wrap. I had a local furniture repair business glue down any loose veneer as well as install matching patches in the areas that were damaged.
Outstanding! That looks great.
Any chance of a close up photo of a repair area? Interested how the professionals dealt with missing veneer.
Thanks!!
