Late Model Slingerland Snares

Loading...

Can anyone tell me what the 2000-2002 model wood Slingerland imported snares were made from?

I bought a snare after reading that the serial number was a 200xxx series and thinking it was about a 1979-1980 model, but hadn't realized that the imports overlapped those serial numbers. I didn't pay much for it, and its probably worth about what I paid, so I'm not too disappointed, but I would like to identify the wood(s) that was/were used in its construction. I believe it was a model that was made by MusicYo around 2000. It has a natural finish, has 8 lugs, and looks a lot like the Artist series from 1979. But after finding the badge images for later models, I now know it to be from 2000-2002 time range.

I wasn't buying for resale so much as collecting, so while its not a prize or even close to it, I'll put it next to my "Savage" metal snare drum. ;)

That bad eh?

I just tore it down to a shell, cleaned it, and rebuilt it. It cleaned up nicely. Overall its not bad construction. The hardware is decent. The snare butt is the worst part on it. And I'm not sure how the shell sounds yet because the heads need replacing.

I would be willing to bet that this being a metal shell that it will sound great, and as you had stated you don't have a lot of money in the drum, so play the daylights out of it!!

Well, it is a wood drum (see initial question above- still unsure what the wood is??). Today I bought some new snare wires for it, a new resonant head, and a new batter head and finally got to play it. It looks pretty good after I cleaned it all up, and sounds amazing for the price. I have some $300 snares that sound worse than this and I've put a total of about $75 into it.

This photo isn't as good because I took it with an iPhone when I was cleaning the drum and the others were taken with an SLR... Its hard to see the detail of the grain...

I'll see what I can do. I hate to remove a drum head right after stretching it out until I've spent some time playing it to break it in. Plus, I have it tuned perfectly. I was planning to do a mic'ed comparison with the new drum. There is nothing quite like a perfectly tuned virgin coated snare drum head!

But I will take some snapshots and post them because I'm hoping someone knows for sure what layers of wood are used in it. It sounds better than my Tama Starclassic Birch snare (I hate the sound of that snare), and at this point I think I like the sound better than the 70's Ludwig Supersensitive snare I restored from my youth- I paid more for parts for it than I did for the entire Slingerland snare!

My only complaint on the Slingerland snare is the snare tension knob loosening. But I'm sure I can find a way to keep it where I set it. I'm thinking I might be able find a silicone rubber cap to slide over it that would tension it against the rest of the mechanism to hold it in place...either that or I might be able to use a screw tensioning compound called vibratite that is used to secure screws in a way that is adjustable on hardware going up on the shuttle. I once used it on the threads of an 8 inch tom that kept detensioning on me when I played it, and it worked great and didn't lock up the screws. I highly recommend it if you have a tom or snare that loosens as you play it.

That is a home run for sure for $75

The Zoomatic alone is worth more than that.

Very pretty to boot !!
