I have a 20" Intermediate at 1987gs (common weight right for the era and diameter) It's flat profile full of lows with the middle-hole (no mids) typical of Intermediates .

Stick sound so very prominent wonder side sticks Nice large intermediate bell.

Lucky to have grabbed it when I did (12+ years ago..)

I love Intermediates. I don't like all Intermediates in a set tho.

Never cared for the hi hats (verses New Stamps)

An Intermediate right and left ( I have an 18 and 20 have had a 22) Becomes "too much" Intermediate.

But still a pleasure

I had one, once. I had (still have one) two 22" Old Ks. One is a New Stamp 2877g (which I decided and still have decided-to keep) And I had- bought off ebay for 1000$- an Intermediate at 2279g.

At the time I thought having two old K 22's was over-board. So I sold the Intermediate to Jeff at Cymbalholic- for 1400$- and he in turn after awhile- sold it to Bill Malley @ ClassicVintagedrums-- who sold it off into the ethersphere.

It was- in my opinion of the time- too low. I had gigged it- thought I couldn't hear- so it was the one chosen "to go".

So my point is I think I'll be able to fit another- well that's the plan- 22" old K--in to "my life" (that's a song..) before it's over............and it'll probably

be an Intermediate ( no desire for another New Stamp- even a lighter than what I have- one)

Intermediate - because being a totally 'another' old K "sound and build" old K, they can (like new Stamps) border on "affordable". Maybe around that 1000$ I paid in 2011.

I'm thinking that Intermediate is on Reverb and Ebay at the moment. CVD at that time- reweighed it and came up with "more than" 2279g..

And there were two tell-tale- marks on it (two brillo pad scrubs up near the bridge area- very obvious).

I used to (still do) say :

Old Stamps= airy Butterfly Breath (IV stiff butterfly wings)

Intermediate- dark dry Ice

New Stamp- Warm mushrooms

and Intermediates among their distinctions had, highs lows and mid frequency hole.

I owned a 2279g 22 Intermediate for a good while. It had a wobble like manta ray and seemed so low I thought I could afford to let it go and keep the other 22 I had a 2877g New Stamp that I still have. I can still remember the Intermediate. Still have a 16" and an 18" Intermediate. Oh and a 20" 1987g how could I forget.

Still like describing the era's. I had 14" top Intermediate for awhile. Bright and Dark with mid freq. Hole. Sticky as all hell. That 20" of mine proved itself it can hold a band together (well trio with Bill Heid, Kenny and me.)

I will never part with the (my) 20" Intermediate 1987g. I found it at a Pa Vintage Show. I had brought along with me the first K I ever owned a 2900g 22" new Stamp bought for $500 on ebay that I played out a few times and it was totally vanilla; no dark no lows no lightning.... I traded it even- after three hits on the 20 Intermediate- at the Pa Show. From King Louie it was on his cymbal "tree"...three hits was all it took to know. He said of the 22" I traded in "someone will want it". And that was true. It brought 700$ a few months after on ebay.

btw, I paid $1000 for the 22" Intermediate 2279g I mention earlier. Most I ever paid for one cymbal (to this day).

Sold it after 3 years to Jeff 'Blueprint' McCrae for $1400. After a year he sold it to Bill Malley Vintage Cymbal and Bill M. sold it for $1700. It's out there somewhere -with two scotch-guard pad-like scratches right below the bell top side- that were there when I bought it.

Thanks, Joe! I haven’t had a lot of opportunities to play this one on gigs, so I’m still trying to figure it out. It records great, and sounds great out front - John Riley played it for a set at the Vanguard, so I got to hear it in the best possible room! But it is a bit stiffer than I’m used to. That might just be an Intermediate thing.

I agree totally about the general qualities of the different stamps, and always loved your "tone guide for old Ks." Intermediates are such an anomaly in the timeline in a way. Nothing looked or sounded like them before or after, but they probably couldn’t have gotten to the New Stamp style without exactly that in between.

I like how Intermediates sound at heavier weights, which mine is approaching, but they are something really special at light weights. I would love to have heard yours at 2279g. I have a friend with an Intermediate at around that weight (it wasn’t yours) that has a chunk taken out from a crack repair - it’s one of my favorite Ks I’ve heard.
