Oops sorry bout that! :)

For my home recording, I put the units on either side of the kit to use the condenser mics for stereo, and use the L/R ins for close mic'ing snare bass and toms [2 units, 4 ins].

For your live purpose simply place the unit somewhere safe, preferably out in front of the band, and run your 2 ins to the mixing board. While the "board mix" can be a little tight and flat, once you add the condenser mics it will open up.

However I'm realizing - the above will net you 3 separate files which you'd need to line up on a computer, so just use the condensers out front and you'll be good.

[edit] "units" refers to H4Ns, not the one you have now.

Magnus, that is a helpful illustration. So we have three guitar players, bass, drums and singer.

So mic the three guitar amps into 1,2,3 bass into 4 and the singer into the PA? My drums are not amplified. Then purchase the H6 and the EXH-6, looks like you remove the condenser mics and plug in the EXH-6.

What I do is to record my drums with the included x/y mics and then use the four inputs for the other instruments. In your case, that would leave you with too few inputs for the rest of the band (4). With the EXH-6, this would still not be ideal.

If you really need a separate input for each instrument, perhaps one of the Zoom digital portas is a better option. There is one with 8 inputs, I believe.

Personally, I have started to lust for the more expensive Zoom F8, a field recorder with 8 inputs.

The first diagram shows a different model than the one I've used. The one we used (owned by the bass player) has two stereo mics in the front, crossing each other in a bizarre X shape (like in the second diagram), and two line inputs on the other end. So we've basically used the mic end to pick up the drums and bass, and since the piano, sax and vocal all go through the desk, two lines out from that go into the line-ins on the Zoom. Works great for a "live" sound!

Thanks again guys for your responses, this will get me started. Now I can think more clearly about what type of device to purchase, the H6 manual and those diagrams are a big help, thank you!

Keep in mind, if all those lines-in equal multiple files on the unit, you will need a PC or Mac and some sort of music edit program to align and combine them for one stereo file. The condenser mics on the H4N produce one stereo file...although you'll still need a computer to get that file off the unit. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your OP.

No, Im good Mitch, all of these ideas are good to hear. Cant buy anything for a while anyway so I have some time to think about this. For now, the Zoom H1 is doing fine.
